1976 F250 4x4 (Highboy) Power Assist Steering

Despite all kinds of advice and suggestions to convert to integral power steering, I do like the Power Assist steering on my 76 F250, and intend to keep it.

(manual box with a pump-driven hydraulic ram on the drag link, and a funky diverter-valve (?) on the Pitman Arm to direct the flow to the ram accordingly on left and right turns)

I do however, want to hear from anyone with some technical experience with this set up.

I have been in the process of building my truck a little differently than stock. Out went a tired 351M / 4spd, in comes the 300 six with AOD.

In my hunt for the bracketry to gear up the six with a P/S pump, I used one for a 1983 F150, and used the newer plastic-housing style p/s pump as well.

Now, after an inital run, the system works perfectly --for right hand turns only!-- I have to bring it back without assist from right, and for any left turns, there is no assist.

My hunch is that the diverting valve is stuck, but I am not certain. I can't see the newer style pump being my problem, but I do have an older style one here....

Hence my hopes that there are people in this forum familiar with the operation of the power assist system.

I admit to being a little hazy as to how the valving operates, as I have not had to dissassemble or rebuild one before.

Any help would be most appreciated, before i go diving into this again.

Hello, one thing you might look at if you are still digging at this is to get the ford factory manual, it goes thru disassebly and testing of the assist unit. I have on too and will be futzing with it soon.

That is good to know.. I have mine taken care of at the moment, but I would be interested in seeing the testing procedures as outlined in the manuals.

I have 4 out of 5 of the shop manual volumes, but i'm missing the chassis volume. I keep looking for it on Ebay, but i dont care to buy the entire set just to get the one... we'll see.

Thanks for the tip!
