Nah, it never happened to me, i always fill the tank when i have 1/4 left, i´ve been told this keeps the fuel pump lubbed, to wait until the tank is empty might burn the pump (also makes the pump grab the dirt wich will always find its way into the tank).
But once, i was with a cousin of mine, he had a 79 Range Rover, of course the thing didn´t have one working clock on it, so we were about 1/2 of a mile from his house when the truck begins to sputter and then dies... I got out and pushed the darn thing (about 2,5 tonnes) more than 90feets (100 meters) on a inclinated avenue (going up-hill, of course), at rush hour... until the Range hitted a root and that was all i could push it. After about 4 hours checking everything in the engine, my genius cousin decides to call my uncle, and the first thing my uncle tells him is: "did you check the fuel son?"... DUH!.

hehe, unless your driving a diesel, compleatly false... Gas is a solvent
anyways no, i havent run out of gas... Ive allways got a full frount tank...
Im thinking ill use the frount take more often, and run the back one down to about 2 gall... so i can make it all of 20 miles if need be
Seriously, I fill up every week, or at least put $10 in... running out of gas would suck
Fix the sending units too... them thingers are importiomagent

I've come close, I know I have. Finally this morning I buckeled down and put $10 in.
Unfortunately, I can't use my rear tank (because its winter and I don't want to change out a tank when its cold AND don't have money to buy a tank right now anyway)
I know how the gauges are, so I watch my odometer. I try to find the money to fill up by 150 miles just to be safe, but I'll run it up to 170 in the winter.
If you have EFI and run your tank dry, WITHOUT starting your truck, turn the key on and off like 10 times. this will continuously prime the fuel pump and keep your injectors from drying out. Dry injectors=Big Bucks!

im always running out of gas, i got a leak in my tank some where but it aint a drip and its driving me crazy, i was "testing my truck" and had it broadside on a wet road at about 5500 rpm and it just died, and i was scared to look under the hood cause i thought something was gonna be sticking out the side of the block to say hi, so i walked back to the house, got in the jeep and got some gas in that was the problem (i was running it off a can under the hood becuase of the tank leak) and poped the hood, nothing sticking out but the can was bone dry.

your car may need new jets and needles, could be running through the carb like on my friends 3 wheeler... but yeah, might be flooded
check the lines and connectors... I hope its not the in cab tank thats leaking... that would scare the crap outta me
good luck
