heat shield rattle???
Hey Guys!
Got a new topic for you to chew on for awhile. At least I thinks its new. I tried a search and no dice.
I have what sounds like a heat shield rattle between 2500-3000 rpms. I installed a Borla catback on my 05 F150 when it had less than 1000 miles on it. Over 8000 on it now. I don't remember exactly when I noticed it but I'm pretty sure the Borla was on it at that time.
The question I am pondering is that I am wondering if the extra rumble from the Borla is causing the rattle. I have looked under the truck and everything seems solid with the exhaust system. Heat shields on cats look tight. The Borla rumble seems the loudest probably in that range of rpm's.
I had the dealer check into it and was told " we can't verify concern at this time". That's BS. It rattles like clock work at those specific rpm's. Actually, at that visit, they couldn't verify any of my "concerns". Not too surprised.
If the Borla is the cause, I will have to live with it, but if not, I will try another dealer. I think another is in the works for future visits anyway. They wanna sell 'em to ya but they don't wanna help ya after.
Thanks for reading my post. Hope somebody has some ideas.

Are you sure it's not exhaust resonance. If it's doing it at a certain RPM and goes away It is not something loose. My Flowmaster on my Expedition would make a racket at a certain RPM then go away. I checked everything. I did have one heat shield come loose but you could hear that at idle. Also keep in mind that when it came loose the Ex had 150,000 on it. I just takced it back in place with the welder. No more noise after that. Does it do it sitting still and revving it up? THere could be a million possibilites. Good luck, I know I hate rattles also. I had my 04 for 2 days and was fixing stupid rattles in it.they're all gone now and I really like this truck.

Not sure if it does it revving it up. I'll have to try that. It is quiet at idle. It really gets annoying, say, driving uphill pulling a trailer and the rpm's stay in the 2500-2700 range for awhile. It really makes noise then. I can feel it in the floor under my feet too. I've heard heat shield rattle on other vehicles and that is exactly what it sounds like. And often times you would hear that at idle more than under power. If it is the exhaust just "resonating" as you say, I will have to live with it. Thanks for the info.
Keep the thoughts flowing. I appreciate any comments you guys have.

When turning Rotors on a brake lathe some set ups use anti Resonance springs to dampen that beutiful chalkboard/fingernail combination we all love. You might want to try a set of these springs wrapped around some sections of your exhaust pipes to see if it dampens the sound. I am not telling you that these will work...but if it is resonance that is causing your problem (where as looking at a specific RPM range that this is happening it probably is) then this just might fix the problem. Worth the price IMO to just try it out if it really bothers you.

spiggy769,
Thanks, do you have any suggestions on where to find something like that??
I am not familiar with how a they turn rotors or what a brake lathe even looks like.
If I am visualizing what you are saying correctly, it would be like wrapping a rubber band around a pencil? The springs around the pipe would help disipate the sound? Or do you actually attach the spring to the frame too??
Not a bad plan.

I had a rattle in my exhaust, don't remember the rpm range but there was a specific range. Needed windows down to hear. Took to ford and they told me that they duplicated it and found a rock between the heat shield and cat, and that it was on Ford this time. If that is the truth, i don't know. I do know that whatever they did fixed it. I haven't looked at the cats to see how possible that would be, but the probability is good from what I have done with my truck. Just an idea, check out the exhaust head shields, on frame and exhaust.

ferguson65,
Thanks for that idea. Up north here they use so much sand and salt (my poor truck) in the winter, they make the interstate hwys look like gravel roads. So, that is VERY possible. I'll have to inspect it. Gosh, I just hate having to go out to the garage, throw on some tunes and work on something. I'll try to suffer through.
