94 F-150- 300 SIX - E4OD grinding noise
Hi,
Last summer the transmission did not want to shift into the lower gears, even from take off. I changed the fluid and it was dark, I changed the fluid 4 months later and it was dark, I used compressed air to check the cooler in the radiator it seemed to be clear. I added a transmission cooler.
Now the transmission makes a grinding noise in 1st and 2nd. A transmission mechanic seems to think the planetary is gone and maybe housing damage. I am looking at $2500 - $3000 to remove , repair and reinstall.
The owners manual list a C6 as an optional transmission, but the technican is against replacing the E4OD with a C6; the speedometer will not work properly, bad gas mileage and wireing problems.
Do I have any options other than this? Of course I could look for another truck; a Big Six with a standard shift.
Thanks,
Smitty

You could just replace the tranny you have now with a rebuilt one couldn't you?
I just did that with my '93 automatic. All that I did was order a rebuilt one, drop out the bad one, replace with the new, and then send the old one back so that it could be rebuilt. I bought this rebuilt one from a Ford dealership. It only ended up costing around $1500, and I did all the work myself.

yeah seems like it'd be cheaper to replace the tranny than fix it. The c6 wouldn't be a bad choice, but it'd cost you more in the end because you'd probably have to re-gear the real axle due to you not having an overdrive gear in the tranny.
I'd call the salvage yards around and see if anybody has a eo4od that they wouldn't mind letting you have. But then again i'd be trying to re-build it myself. Still if there's a lightly used one there then you could just buy it and swap it in. If it's in good shape it could easily last the life of the truck. Whatever you do, don't pay 2.5-3k on the tranny you have.

Thanks for the good replies.
Hi,
I'll call the dealership near me tomorrow about a replacement transmission. That will certainly be less expensive that the rebuilding route.
I don't think I had any anti-freeze in transmission fluid. A friend of mine who runs a shop said when it ran hot the cooler possibly clogged and would not let fluid get back the transmission and that "burned it up".
If I can get the replacement for 1500, or even if it's a little more I can hire my friend to put it in for $350.
Thanks,
Smitty
