Rubber hose between filler pipe and gas tank on 1990 Ranger

I just inherited a 1990 Ford Ranger standard cab short bed 2.3L 5 speed manual. The gas gauge didn't work so I got a mechanic to replace the sending unit. It now works. But when I try to fill the gas tank there is gas that runs out of the rubber hose between the filler pipe and the gas tank because the rubber hose is so old and has cracked. The dealership won't sell just the rubber hose. They will only sell the complete filler pipe assembly to the tune of $110 at cost!!! There has to be a cheaper way to replace just the hose but what kind of hose could be used for gasoline? Any ideas from you guys?

Try a NAPA auto parts store or Car Quest auto parts. This was suggested by one of the guys behind the counter at a discount auto parts store in my area here in Mi. He also suggested that radiator hose will work if you have a somewhat straight shot to the tank so the hose won't kink and some stores have some that is large enough in diameter to fit the tank and the filler neck. The only other option would be to find one in a wrecking yard.

Yeah either boneyard it (cheaper) or just check Autozone, Napa, Western Auto, etc. If you take yours off and take it with you you'd have a lot easier time finding one, though it's not the easiest to remove.

Whenever I need quality, specialty hose products, the name Parker comes to mind. Visit their website and see if their catalog is online or contact a hose supplier.

My 91 ranger has a cracked filler hose too. About 6 years ago i used some 3M sealant (looks like tar) to fix my cracked hose. I had to smear the sealant onto the hose with my fingers. It's a tight reach but i got enough on to seal the cracks. It needed 2 layers to fix it. Let it cure for a few hours before topping off the tank.

Go to your local boat marina to look for your rubber hose. They usually have an assortment of hoses for outboard motors.

Good luck.
