1999 Triton 5.4 Around 115000 Miles. It Is Running Sluggish And Has Been Shifting Funny. When I Stomp On It It Will Shift Up And Only Hit The Passing Gear If It Is Floored. I Took It To Autozone To Read The Code Because The Check Engine Light Has Been On And It Was Reading The Egr Valve. Replaced It And Nothing Changed Reset Light And Came Back On And Read The Same Thing? Any Suggestions?

 

Was it a Code P0401? For EGR insufficient flow? It could be one of ??? things, Remove the EGR valve and clean the ports (wire brush ONLY, NO Chemicals.) Not saying this will fix it, just Trouble-shooting System. Cheapest and Easest way First, right? Also, check DPFE (hoses, for loose connection) sensor, EGR Vac. Regulator.

 

Another blown AutoZone diagnosis and another wasted EGR valve.

Check the 97-03 F150 forum for hundreds of posts concerning the common EGR codes.

Usually, its either clogged EGR ports or a faulty DPFE sensor, but do the vacuum test to isolate.

Much like O2 sensor replacement when the codes says O2 sensor... in reality, for instance, it is the MAF. All these sensors tie together, so unless it's a complete failure, a code shouldn't necessarily lead you to replace the sensor. Do some other checks of the system first. Post up on the site if you have a question, don't trust an auto parts sales person just because they can hold a code reader.

DPFE sensor is cheap and easy. Rockauto.com has them for around $40 I think. You can easily check it's operation with a voltmeter. The EGR valve is about the same price there.

If you have EGR issues, may I also suggest that you make sure the EGR tube is clear. It's the tube that goes up from the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve on the driver's side.
