What Air Horn is this? Not a train, not a toot, what?

5 years ago when I was OTR many trucks ran these great loud air horns that were not a high pitch train horn, but rather a tight staccato (flatgellating) sound that's really quite common. I've been on the Grover and Hadley websites but can't seem to find what I'm looking for. Been tryin' on the 10 meter radio for two days tryin' to talk to truckers but in this area all my old friends have been replaced by snotty brats. Any ideas?

Not sure what you mean by a train horn being high pitch. The trains I hear have 3 horns that form a chord that is loud and what I would call midrange.

The length of the horn mostly determines the pitch. What length horn do you have in mind?

I purchased a single horn from a truck salvage yard that is probably 16-18" long. It is a nice tone and when I put 120 psi to it, it was super, super loud. I fact some friends told me it is too loud and maybe illegal.

I looked up and indeed in CA there are sound limits for horns!

Personally, if i lived in CA and you have idiots there like we have in Houston, i would use it and gladly pay the fine with a smile. I have had a truck horn honk at me before, and its enough to make you wet yourself if your not expecting it and your windows are down.

if im hearing it corectly then i think your are indeed looking for a factory peterbilt or freightlines or any other factory horn. family freind of mine runs a few hay trucks and one has 4 trumpets on the top of the cab that have a loud but deep bellow like tone. it will make you sit up and listen too lol. hope that helps

Yeah, a boat horn would be great! One that sounds like the Queen Mary or something like that. Or the Adams Family doorbell.

Wow! Thanks for all the responses fellas. In the coming weeks I'll be heading up valley and I think I'll hit a truck stop and ask some drivers if they'd be willing to give a short burst so I can obtain part no.

Okay, it turns out that the horn I'm after is the same as on the "bandit 2" truck in that old movie "smokey and the bandit" THAT is the tone I'm after! Anyone know what that horn is?

Hmmm...Not sure I just checked them and they work fine...I've bought a lot from these guys and always get taken care of well. I have the Conductors Special and there isn't anything louder. It'll clear a mall parking lot.
