Supercharge a 460

Im lookin to supercharge my 97 F250 460. Vortech offers a kit that looks preety good but I really want a roots type blower. Kenne Bell used to make an awesome 460 twin screw blower but they no longer offer the product. Does anyone know who offers a roots type supercharger for a 460? Also what are the long term ramifacations of supercharging? My truck is well maintained but time takes a toll on all things. I have 120k on it with no internal mods. A banks power pack is the most I have done to it. Without rebuilding the engine is it wise to supercharge at this point? I am just looking for some feedback on my new plan. Thanks in advance for all your input.

To start, you'll get even worse MPG than you already do with that 460

I'd do a compression or leakdown test to make sure things are OK.

I put my blower on my 5.4L at 100K miles, now have 130K miles and still runs fast. I've spoken to guys in other forums with close to 200K blown miles on their trucks. Most were with centrifugal Prochargers, but that's not to say a root-type is less durable, I just haven't heard from them.

IMHO centrifugual boost is easier on your engine (boost rises with RPM), but that's just my opinion. OEMs use roots-types or twin-screw (in some cases, but no OEM uses a centrifugal), so I'm sure they are plenty reliable as well.

Just don't run crazy boost on stock internals and you should be fine. Those 460s are very durable.

If all you can get is a centrifugal, you may want to consider it. The 460 already makes huge low-end torque, but they don't breathe well up top. A centrifugal blower would help, and the mild boost at mid-rpm would be pretty easy on your engine. Just something to think about.

Sounds like the Vortec kit is the way to go. I think it has a 5 psi pulley with it and I am told that at 5 psi I do not need an intercooler. I get between 14 and 16 mpg now, how much do you think I will lose? Thanks again for your response.

That's great MPG for a 460. Most blowers go into bypass mode when you aren't in the boost, so MPG isn't really changed unless you get on it.

Once you get on it, boost = power = fuel, so your MPG will go down.

In my case, it's so satisfying to get on it, I'm into the boost a lot, so I only get like 10mpg in my Expedition. I've babied it and got ~14mpg, about what I got before the blower, but I didn't put all that hard work into it to just baby it!

5psi is fine for no intercooler. You can run a lot more with an intercooler, I run 10.5 psi on stock internals.

Keep in mind that boost climbs with RPM on a centrifugal, so 5 psi at max rpm is a lot less at, say, 2000 rpm. So while I make 10.5 psi at 5000 rpm, it's closer to 6 psi at 2500 rpm.

What’s the part number for the kit you were going to buy. Did you go through with the super charger. Any updates.

He was last here Feb. 2018, last post in 2011.

He traded the 460 truck without another word about supercharging.

I see this a lot with other sites. New members posting questions about something that happened a long time ago. Rarely does the added post aid to the thread, but it can.

I suspect that the truck is now made into Harbor Freight tools by now.
