1986 ford 4.9L setting timing help needed

Vehicle: 1986 E-350, 4.9L 300 6 Cyl auto trans/ac
New long block.
Doing something wrong, Brought number one piston all the way up to tdc on compression stroke , had notch on harmonic balance pulley at zero, installed distributor with rotar pointing towards number one spark plug wire.
Backfired, moved distributor from full advance to full retard.
please help.
Just installed a new reman long block from Marshall rebuilders.
Can't start the engine, stopped work at 9:00 pm pst.
Looking to get back to work in the morning.

well it seems you missed one big step, you forgot to make sure it was on the compression stroke when you brought it to TDC. so you are 180 degrees off.

Timing 4.9L

Thanks for your reply
When I brought the piston all the way up,does the piston come all the way up on both the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke? Thanks for any help

yes it does. you need to make sure both valves are closed that will tell you if in fact it is on the compression stroke

4.9L timing

Thanks, I think I must hold a cork or finger in the spark plug port, then have someone hand crank the engine. Does air force its way out only on the compression stroke?

you can pull the valve cover or place your finger over the spark plug hole and crank the engine until you start to feel pressure building. then bring it to TDC on the balancer and reset the dizzy.

Thanks 390 and this helpful forum

I'll be 62 years old on 4-16-06, and we're helping my 32 year old son get his 1986 E-350 running.
This my first engine pull and install, I bought a 8 ton ram cherry picker, HD engine stand, 20 gallon wash table.
With your help tomorrow I'll complete the install.

thankyou again
