Intermittent heavy white smoke

Yesterday I was coming back from town and as I was looking in p/s mirror changing lanes I noticed heavy white smoke. I only noticed this upon decel or coast. Once I rolled back into the throttle the white smoke would dimminish. I'm sure it was coolant from the smell. The truck (04 F250 CC 6.0) is now at the dealer for troubleshooting. I believe it to be a blown head gasket, but wouldn't that make it blow white smoke out the exhaust all the time? Maybe a cracked EGR cooler? Any thoughts.

my 06 just started doing that the other morning, after it warms up it quits, but have not noticed any power loss it seems like the egr valve is sticking. Have not had time to put it in the shop yet.

hmmm, i can never see any white smoke, but it is my understanding that on the 6ohh, when the hg goes, it just pressurizes the cooling system, and blows the coolant out the bottle, instead of ingesting it into the combustion chamber.

Yeah I'd have to stay steam with a distinct coolant smell. I'd have to say it's heavy.....borderline steam locomotive when I roll off the throttle at highway speed.

If it is during warm-up, and the air outside is below 45F. Then this is normal, however if it does it all the time, this is not normal. If you look closely at your neighbors when they leave their drives, they probably have steam coming out of their tail pipes. If you had a coolant leak, it would happen more when it is warm, then when it is cold. This is because the coolant is pressurized when it warm due to water expansion. The added pressure would inject more coolant into your cylinder walls.

Wink

Yes I had a Pred with 65 HP tune installed at the time but did not tell the dealer that ofcourse! Just got off phone with Ford Service dept and I'm being told that the oil cooler and EGR cooler both require R2... After those parts are replaced they will double check to see if I do also have a head gasket failure. The truck has 45k miles on it and has had the Pred back in for the last 2k. I did run the truck for nearly 30k miles stock. In that time it went to the dealer once for a rough idle problem. It was easily fixed (24 hr turnaround).

IMO, the Pred. set at 65 H.P should have little (if any) negative impact on the engine / components. Just my opinion though. I have not re-installed mine since the reflash last Aug but, not because I am concerned about programmer related damage.....Abuse at any H.P. obviously would not be a good thing.

Hopefully it will not be head gaskets. Here, we have seen tuned and stock units require head gasket replacement.

Pease keep us informed.

white smoke and bucking

I started seeing this some time ago on my truck too. And mine too...usually when at lower RPMS, happens allot around 1200 to 1500 RPMS. Mostly when I get off the gas, and more on local streets than on the HW.

I think it's the EGR or EBP valve(s) getting stuck.? At least that's what I remember from seeing other posts on this months ago.

I have to take the truck in for it's 30K service, and there is a recall...and I think it's to address this and maybe other things as well.

But, I also have something else going on more recently, and I wonder if it's related to this.

Anyone have this one....? Occasionally, my truck will start to buck...almost like it's choking. Happens more going up hill. It's scary when it happens. It happened to me once in the High Sierras...and I thought it was going to stall. Had to pull over it got so bad. Then I rev'd the engine....it blew out a bunch of whitish smoke (NOT steam)... I shut the truck off for a while (5 minutes)....then when I drove off again it seemed to be OK. But it does still happen occasionaly. Would appreciate any insights into these.

Thanks

PS. It's a 2004, F350, Harley Package, fully loaded, 4x4, big cab, long bed, Edge Juice w/Attitude...

PSS. The white smoke was happening before the edge kit install. I have it disconnected at the moment to take thr truck in for service...and it did it again (white smoke that is) ...it did it again yesterday...

Thanks again.

White Smoke

Is most of the time from transmision fluid being drawn into the carb from the line going to the transmision.

I don't think I'll be buying this product. Tech support sucks.

Did you ever find out the cause of the white smoke? I have similar symptoms and at a loss. But I am losing coolant out the secondary bottle also.

Howdy Wayne,

Welcome aboard!

It's always better to simply post a new thread with your symptoms instead of resurrecting an old (14 years old!!) thread. The original Poster (OP) may not even still have the truck!

Your problem is most likely a failed EGR cooler. They either begin leaking a little or just fail altogether dumping coolant directly into the intake.

In any case, your best bet would be to test the cooling system by measuring the coolant pressure under load.

My 2005 6.0L F350SD only had 41,000 miles on it and the EGR cooler still failed catastrophically. Even though I did not have head gasket failure, I still had the shop replace the head gaskets and install ARP head studs in place of the OEM "torque-to-yield" head bolts. They did every other upgrade recommended while it was apart.

Find a good shop that does this stuff!

Cheers,

Rick

It wasn't cheap.

I appreciate you taking the time out to respond and educate. I will know for certain this Wednesday Dec 18th evening but I believe that my 2015 6.7 powerstroke platinum 350 has a failed / defective air to water cooler. Evidently common problem On same year/make/model. I also have a running thread on the FTE forum and many people are anxious for the results. Thanks again. Wayne
