Cracked Block to fix or not to fix..........
Hi all, I want your opinions on this.I've got a 96 Ford Explorer v6 4x4, 267k on it, body is straight, just put $400 tires and rims on it, new tranny last fall plus new cat, o2's, fuel module etc. on it in the past 2 years. But now the Ford dealership is telling me she has a cracked block...............Reman. engine is $3300 plus labor, but I can get an engine thats got 106k from a salvage yard for $1000 plus labor to install. She's paid off in 3 payments, which would help us alot financially to not have car payments, but here's the thing--What would you do in this situation? Fix her or Finance into a another rig? Thanks in advance.

I guess it comes down to really what is wrong with it. What does it mean a cracked block? If the cylinder cracked through to a water jacket, the cylinder can be resleaved. You can get a V-6 rebuilt for about $1500 - that's new pistons, cam shaft, lifters, valeves/springs...you need to pull the motor and put it back in.
An used engine for a grand? You can buy 2 or 3 running cars for a grand. Go find a trashed explorer for a grand and get yourself a boat load of spare parts in the process.
