Check engine light

I drive a 98 F150 and my check engine light just came on. I have found no obvious problems, is there any kind of test i can do to find out what caused it to come on without taking it to a repair shop?

Go to Autozone and they'll scan the ECU for free. Get the codes and report back here. Get the actual codes and not what the guy says that they mean.

WRITE DOWN the codes.

Come back here and SEARCH using the code(s) as your keywords.

If you can''t find relevent information, then ask.

Is there any place that does the test other than Autozone? Closest autozone is 130miles away.

Call any auto parts store. Most likely they can scan the codes.

There is a tube that picks up changes in the gsa fumes at the fill tube, that are sent to a sensor on the firewall, part of the emission control system, this will set off the check engine light.

There are dozens of things that can cause a CEL.

Guessing at the cause without any codes is about like pi$$ing into the wind.
