You might want to crawl under that 78 cj7 and then compare it to my 73 bronco. Ford quit using a Dana 30 in 71 and the AMC 20 is embarrassing. The jeep v8 is a great engine but, unfortunately, the rest of the drivetrain just won't hold up to the abuse. I've had Jeeps and really like them. They are fun to drive and are great for running through mudholes but they don't match an Early Bronco.

tdwhiteIII, I hope you don't think I'm totally against Jeeps. In fact, for the average weekender, Jeeps are very appropriate since they are inexpensive and cheap to repair. They just aren't made to handle the abuse of an Early Bronco. I enjoy driving Jeeps and I have several buddies that own Jeeps and I've owned them in the past, however, even my Jeep buddies agree that an Early Bronco has a tougher built drivetrain. The problem is that most people don't even know what an Early Bronco is. Most people say, "hey, I like your Jeep".

No I was not under the impresion you disliked them.
I was just happy to hear someone besides myself stickin up for the old trucks most of my friends own jeeps and I am constantly trying to lose them out in the field.
I have never been able to .
my reason for posting this whole thing is because I want something other than jeep I am leaning towards the early landcruisers but they are expensive.

I would have to say that the '50s Chevy pickups with the NAPCO 4X4 conversion are quite possibly the most sought after 4X4. They might not be a great offroad performer, but they are very rare, making them a favorite for competitors.

There were soo many awesome out of the box 4x4s I could never narrow it down to just one. I am a sucker for vintage 4x4s foreign and domestic...military or civilian I love em all!

OK in trucks I say the most sought after 4x4 by an educated person would be 79 F350. Dana 70/60, 205 TC, C6 or NP 435. Before too much emissions, solid axle, new enough for goodies like ignition and proper power steering. Close second: 76 F250, undesirable power steering, a bit weaker Dana 60/44, but last year of FE engines and came with right ride height. (I have one also!!)

SUV: 79 Bronco nothing more to say you know this is a great do it all rig!!

I would say the most sought-after 4X4 around here would be a '69-'72 K5 Blazer. Another one going for big bucks is the '46-'68 Dodge WM-300 Military Power Wagon. Early Bronco's are nice, but so many of them had the anemic small 6 cylinder, and it's really hard to find one that wasn't owned by an idiot who screwed it all up. Same goes for Toyota FJ-40's. I like '73-'76 F-250 4X4's, too.
