how much for a stock 9"? bolt-in for 54?

Per the technical article on rear-end swaps for my 54, I'm looking for a 9" which is claimed to be a bolt in. [Someone please confirm!]

The local yard quoted me $400 for a stock 57-72 9", hub to hub. Seems excessive - am I just dreaming? I was thinking more like half this amount.

Thanks!

Brad -

I agree with you on the price range. Make them a counteroffer of $200. Start checking classifieds, ebay, local pennysaver papers, etc.

Be advised that the difference between early and later 9" assemblies is bearing sizes and whether the E-brake is self-adjusting. You'll want the later (self-adjusting) model if you get a choice. I think it was '66 or '67 when they went that way.

Also, pay attention to the gear ratio. A good road gear is 3.00:1 (or something between 2.75 and 3.25). You won't be happy if you wind up with a 4.56 or something. There is a tag on the pumpkin that telss what the ratio is.

Thanks for the more specific date range to look for. Perhaps the tech doc could be updated to reflect this?

I'm doing this to replace my 4.10s with hwy gears, so I'll be paying attention to that.

Dittos to RandyJack's comments; you should be able to find one in the $150 to $200 range. You might find a "parting out" 72 or earlier F100/150 at a better $.

Ford 9" are in high demand by the drag/circle track racers and hot rodders since they are so strong, so some think they are gold plated. There are some bolt in 8" units that are still plenty strong for anything short of a Banzi dragracer with >400HP that sell for a lot less and are easier to find.

I was just quoted 189.00 for a 1972 rear differential- delivered from my local yard. Not bad for not having to pull it myself and lug it home. 400 is too much.

Per the tech article, the 57-72 will bolt in. I'm not a welder and need bolt in solutions. Plus, this maintains the original 5 x 5 1/2 bolt pattern so I can keep my wheels. If there is another specific solution that meets these requirements, please advise.

Once again, thanks to all...

Do a search on www.car-part.com to get a good feel for prices and see if there is a yard close enough to you that has one.

Are the shocks a bolt in for the 54? I know that they are not on the 48-52. I do not know on the 54. Can someone out there confirm the shock nmout setup for the 54 to 9 "?

On the 48-52 you can use the F-2 and up lower shock mounts. They will fit the axle diameter tubes on the 9". I'm not sure on the 53-56 trucks

$400 is too much, shop around

December. Sacramento Pick-N-Pull $120 drumb to drumb from a 72 F100. Spring Pads fit. Unfortunately, the pinion and ring gear were shoot, according to a machinists. I had to go back and exchange (pull) the differential for another 9" .

Tell us where you're at. I'm sure someone here could help you find a good one, maybe even one with a nice ratio, for way less money.
I would say it is very unlikely though that you would find one that wouldn't require relocating and welding the spring perches and/or the shock mounts.
Good luck.

I'm in Portland Or. We have a big swap meet here the 1st week in April. I'll keep checking the ads, Craigs list, etc. between now and then. But I'm also having my 3rd child on March 31st, which means I probably won't have a ton of time this spring/summer to deal with much rear-end changing except for diapers!

Then you have two different bolt patterns and might have to carry two spares. I found a complete pumpkin 3.00 to 1 for on ebay for less than a hundred bucks delivered. Granted I haven't actually driven more than ablock on it yet buy there wasn't excessive free play in the gears, the wear marks were all even, and I saw no broken teeth. Make sure you know the spline count your axles have if you go this way. 31 spline or 28. Most were the 28 spline unless it was a heavy duty rearend. I hope this helps, Good luck John

If you have no other option ask the yard to include the shock crossmember and spring mounts in the deal for $400. Then it would just be a matter of bolting in the rear end and locating the correct placement for the crossmember and bolting that in too.
