noise from drivetrain

I have a 97 F150 4.6L 4x4 auto w/178900 miles, and when I put it into reverse this morning to go to school I got a small clunk wasn't loud but it was noticeable. I have done a lot of searching and read that it can be the slip yoke making noise. It also has a small honk accelerating from a stop. My question is would greasing the slip yoke stop the clunk? I know the honk would stop. I bought the truck in Sept. of 2005 it did not make any kind of noise then. I am very pleased w/ the truck.

P.S. this is also posted in the clutch and drivetrain forum also so I'll try my luck here.

Certainly can't hurt to grease it. I haven't read the specifics on the slip yoke deal in quite some time, but I think it requires a certain grease. Let us know.

7700Rob, the greas to be used from what I have read is ford teflon grease specially designed for use with the slip yoke. I also saw that any good quality bearing grease works.

Just talked to my dad and he said that the clunk is from backlash in the rear end. The noise is coming more from the middle of the truck underneath the cab and not the rear. Rear end was serviced on last oil change and everything was sound there was no excessive play in any part of it. I think I'll grease the slip yoke and see what happens.
