Question Speeding Ticket in NC requires court appearance?

Just got a call from my mom. She and a friend were driving in NC and he was ticketed for speeding. About 15 over if I recall. Not sure where or what law enforcement. She says citation requires court appearance, he cannot mail in a fine. They live in northern Maryland (considerable hours away) and are both around 80 years old. Question to my NC fellow FTEers: Does this sound right? Going back for this would be quite a hardship.

Yeah cause they were going more than 10 mph over the speed limit.
In NC you can lose your license at 15 mph over the speed limit,it depends on the officer that stops them.I would say to get a Lawyer and let him to handle it maybe the Lawyer can get a I think it's called a prayer of judgement where they won't have to pay a fine but if they get a ticket again they will have to pay the original ticket.I don't know if this helps but get a lawyer who does alot work in traffic court that way if he can get them out of it it will keep the insurance rates down too.

Hmmmm, I suggest contacting the clerk of court of the county that the ticket was issued in. I can't imagine that a guilty plee paid with certified funds would not be accepted.

I suspect they are slightly confused on what is actually written. With the Interstate hiways running through the state like they do, there has to be a way for out of stste motorist to pay traffic fines without an apperance. IMHO

Stop!
I am an expert on this matter!
Find out the county the ticket was in. Look up lawyers for that county on google.
Call the lawyer and send money. Ticket gone.
I have gone through this in several states. It works every time.
You do NOT have to appear in court.
Please take my advice and hire a lawyer.
Good luck!

Dave, I know that I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but why would one need to spend $150.00-200.00 for a lawyer to pay off a speeding ticket?

I'd say you might as well pack an over-night bag and get ready for a road trip.In NC ,if you are going 15 over or above ,you will have to make an appearance, this is a fine you can't pay.You might try calling the magistrate for that county and explain you,re from out of town, but,I don't think it'll help.I don't know if I'd spend money on a lawyer or not until I checked this out.

A lawyer would count for showing up in court, and would likely be able to get the ticket reduced at the same time.

Probably because the ticket will not show up on your record.
This is a GOOD reason to have a lawyer represent you.
Your call though. I have VAST experience with matters such as these!

Yes, in most cases a lawyer can handle that without defendant actually present in traffic cases. How many CEO's, after all, get tickets AND go to court? They hire lawyers. My dad hired one, at 500.00, and still had to pay the full fine.

well i do know if any one from NC gets a ticket out of state and no matter if you pay the fine, the state will still take your DL it has happen to me twice, but she could get a lawyer to a prayer for judgement and it more then likely get it kicked out of court

As it stands now, the fellow's going to drive down and go to court. I contacted a law office, and the fee was higher than he wanted to pay. My mom will go with, so they'll make an adventure out of it. I'll let you all know how things turn out. Thanks all for the advice and info.

I still think NC is in the dark ages on this one.

Have them go in early, plee it down, ask for 9 over. You pay the fine but don't get any points that way if their state is on info exchange with NC.

Firefighter, if you DL was pulled you must have been stopped 20 or more over.
