460 balance question

I've got a 1986 f-250 w/ a 460 & 4 speed. I am replacing it witha 460 out of a '79. The engine is out of a 1979 for 1/2 ton that had an automatic behind it. Block Casing # D9TE-AB and the spacer/weight that goes behind the harmonic balancer is #D9TE-6359 AA. The '79 had the spacer/ balance weight on it when it had the auto. behind it. Do I need to use it when I put the 4-speed trans. behind it? The '86 460 didn't have one on it, but I don't know if it was suppose to have one on it or not. Any help is appeicated. Thanks, neals

They both should have as they are both external balance engines unless some one has swapped in a 78 or older 460 in the 86 truck. What are the block numbers on the 86 motor?

Does the flywheel from the 86 motor have a counter weight cast into the back side? The 79 motor will need the front counterweight left on it and a weighted flywheel that the 86 should have. If the motor hadn't been changed as stated above.

Somebody has done some motor swaping. You will need to use a weighted flywheel for an 80's 460 on your new motor and leave the front weight on also.

In the first post you stated it was a D9 block and now you've said it was a D1 block? I think your current truck motor was swapped with a late model pre 78 motor and the one you are looking at getting is a late model 79 and later version. If so they are two different animals.

Here's where things can get funny. You can install the late model 79 crank and up in an early block but not the other way around. So you could have a D1 block with the externaly balance crank and rods.

The D1 block should have D3 heads, not that they couldn't be changed.

As stated you will need a late model flywheel with the D9 or later motor.

actually the D1VE block could have had DOVE, DOOE, D2OA, D2VE, or the D3VE heads on them all from the factory.

You're correct. 99% of the time they will be D3 heads.

Now that statement I will agree with although maybe not the 99% I might buy the 96%

just remember all the 429s and 460s built in 71 would have DOVE heads (or the cj head if that was what the engine happens to be), and all of them built in 72 would have had D2OA or D2VE but would all have had the D1VE blocks. But if it is any year other than those 2 it should have the D3VE heads (about 5 yrs worth actually 73-78)
