What are the reasons to convert a truck to propane? Does the motor last longer? I have seen a few trucks that this has been done to. Is it hard to convert a FI truck over? Has anybody here done it?
Conversion to propane is a mixed bag.
The engine will last longer and there are fewer nasty emissions. Depending on your location it may or may not be more economical.
On the otherhand you will get less MPG and performance is reduced in almost all aspects.
Several of the gas companies around here are converting to compressed natural gas.
The conversion is a bit expensive, but the latest generation of conversion equipment makes about the same power as gasoline does.

i dont totally agree with the lose of performance statment.i run a 12:5 to 1 CR 428 SCJ on straight multi port propane injection, with an increase in performance.the propane fed engines like high compression ratios, they do very well in these applications. my engine was 425 horsepowerat the crank before the convertion, and now is 428 peak hp at the rear wheels.you get better low end torque on propane, than carbed gas engines.there is no fuel pump, and you dont have fuel issue problems that occur on 4x4 trucks when off roading at steep angles. yes there are some conversions that do rob power, but if it is done right, you will not have these problems.if your just converting a truck to propane ,and not doing any other up grades, you could loose power.ive got a msd billet distriutor, big tube headers,3inch dual exhaust with 5inch tail pipes,1 inch fuel line, etc.
Hotrod is right, if done right you won't lose power. The key is building the engine for the fuel but at the same time having a system to match the engine. He did that. The more common conversion is the Impco 425, so right there, if you have a larger engine you are going to choke it. But I too have a question about the LPG Injection, did it come with a stand alone ECU? I did alot of reading awhile back and all I could find were systems to convert EFI engines using the factory ECU and sensors with minimal power loss, if any at all.
my injection system is hand built. multi port injection is very new,and we are still trying to get a patent on the one on my truck.when it is completed,i will be happy to get into the systems workings.all i will say now,is it works very well .
hey 351M im going to be in prince george this thursday, but i will be in a 2006 f350 4x4 power stroker.my son is in the bc provincial wrestling championship tournament. my father lives up in PG.-billy
