My 7.3 quit when I put it in reverse-why?

Drove it 2 hours on Saturday, got to my destination, put it in reverse to back up, stepped on the gas and it died-instantly. Put it in park, turned the key, and it started right up. Put it in reverse, idling fine, stepped on the gas and same thing, died instantly, like someone shut off the key. Put it in park again, restarted it, and then it was fine, and has been perfect ever since-anyone seen that before?

My truck kinda does the same thing except it doesn't stall. It will start to lug really low like it wants to stall but if i let off the throttle it idles back up. I have it down to the torque converter to. Hope it last for awhile. I'm broke!

Strange, never heard of that-interesting-

Really doesn't seem to be transmission related, but maybe?

There are a few reasons that the engine would stall going into reverse.

In order that I recommend checking:

Low trans fluid.
Dislodged internal trans filter.
Short in the wiring to the torque converter lockup solenoid.
Sticking torque converter control valve in the valve body.
Bad torque converter.

Thanks, I will check into that-I am installing a Sonnex kit this week anyway, so I can check on that filter at that time-

Sounds kind of funny that it would idle while in reverse.
It only dies when you touch the throttle?

Were you able to increase RPMs while in neutral?

Don't rule out the throttle pedal sensor. They still used those on your year truck? Crawl under the dash and see how the pedal bar is attached. Just above the pivot point, where they used to connect the throttle cable, you'll see the sensor (no cable anymore). A grounding issue here might cause a similar problem.

Yeah, kind of strange. It does not die when I put in it reverse, just when I touched the throttle. And only twice, it has been perfect ever since-That is why I don't think the torque converter is at fault (but I have been wrong before) I will check that pedal linkage out, is there a ground wire there I should look for?

i agree. it sounds like when you push your pedal it hits a bare wire and shorts something out i dont know what is near the pedal assembly but that is where i would start looking
