Glow Plug Relay Keeps Cycling Even After Engine Is Running

I guess that I will start from the top. I bought a 1992 F-250 with a 7.3 and automatic. When I first bought it, it would not start on it's own if the engine was cold. If I plugged it in, then it would start right up but the glow plug relay would cycle about 20 times or so. The wait to start light would only come on for about a second or so.

I changed the glow plugs, and the wait to start light would come on for about 15 seconds or so. When the wait to start light would go out, everything including the dash lights and dome light would shut off. The truck would not even consider starting because everything electrical was shut down. If I turned the key off and then back on, the truck would do the same exact thing.

Then I bought a brand new glow plug control module with the relay attached to it. Now the wait to start light stays on for about 15 seconds or so, and the truck will start up just fine. My problem is that the glow plug relay is still cycling like it did when the truck wasn't starting on it's own. It cycles about 20 times or so and then finally stops - it does this whether the truck is started or not.

I did load test both batteries and one needs to be replaced. I don't think that the bad battery should have any effect on the relay cycling like that because the engine turns over just fine. I am going to replace the battery regardless.

I don't have much of an idea as to what could be the cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I think its normal for the glowplugs to cycle after the truck is started. I'm sure someone will know forsure but i wouldn't be to worried about it!!

Welcome to FTE. I know the gps cycle on and off a few times, but I don't know how many. Hang in there. Dave or Pete or someone else will wander in who knows for sure.

What kind of gps are you using? Did you test the batteries with the cables off?

Here is the immediate answer to your question, I did PM you the whole gammit......

At the same time the Ignition Switch is turned to RUN, voltage from Maxi-fuse K is applied to the after-glow timer (located inside the Glow Plug Controller). The after-glow timer cycles the Glow Plugs for up to two minutes, depending on engine temperature. The after-glow timer then opens. The Wait-To-Start Indicator Lamp will not light during the after-glow period.

what he said is that it is supposed to do that. it will cycle on/off till the temp reaches a certain point, then shut off.

and Jeff, your signature will only show in a post if you are a supporter.

Jeff I see your signature........says you have a Harley and a 91 250 4x4. I do not think being a supporter is required, mine works.

Just hold your curser over it and it will show.

Glow plug cycling for 20 to 30 seconds after starting is normal. Just watch your voltmeter needle on your dash go for and back. The "Wait to Start" light will not come back on after it has gone out unless you turn off the ignition and turn it back on.

Jeff,
In the grey bar above each post, look to the right side of the bar.
See the word "Signature"?
Hold your mouse pointer over that word.
A bubble will pop up with the info in it.

tjc and trike are members of "Club FTE", that is why their signature is displayed in each post they do.
It costs 16 dollars a year to join Club FTE.
