Hints for getting rust out of fuel tank?
<edited to remove truck specific info>
Does anyone have any good, cheap tricks for getting the rust out of my existing fuel tank?
I've heard that I could put sandbasting sand or an assortment of things in it and shake it around for a good while to knock the rust loose. Then wash it with hot water and clean out with alcohol. Any other ideas?????

There is a topic on repairing fuel tanks here that may have some info in it. You could also try the <SEARCH> function in the [link:www.ford-trucks.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID76&conf=misc|Fu el Injection, Carburation and Fuel System Forum].
Nuts bolts and washers is the only way I know to clean the tank.

I used about 10 ft of clean tow chain with the end anchored outside the tank (easier to get out of the tank). Placed it on a sawhorse then rocked back and forth.flip and did it again.....after that I acid cleaned with muratic acid then flushed with bleach laundry detergent and water...several clear rinses then dried it out over low heat......

Replacement is always best but this user needs ideas on cleaning this one. Also someone may need the ideas later on another irreplaceable tank.

Hints for getting rust out of fuel tank?
I have a 30+ year old Honda that I cleaned with some acidic mixture from JCWhitney, rinsed with something else, and then coated with this white gooey stuff. It all came in a kit, was recommended for auto tanks, but I used it on the Honda more than 15 years ago, and it still looks good inside. Had to stopper the crossover tubes, and take out the drain/stop **** fitting, and I covered the filler with masking tape so I could roll the tank around to coat the inside. FWIW.

I use dsome stuff for a motorcycle tank. I got it at a motorcycle dealer. It comes in two bottles. One is an acid. Pour that in and fill tank with water. Let it sit per instructions.
Dump out solution. Rinse well. Second bottle is some type of coating that preserves the metal. Made it look like new inside.
You may have to by a couple for the larger tank.
Works great. Sorry I can't recall the name.
