SOHC VIN X & VIN E

Every time I go to look up a filter, I'm asked if I have the Vin E or Vin X. I've always wondered what the difference is. I assume [let the flaming begin] that my VIN will have an E or an X somewhere in it.

The eighth digit of your VIN is the engine code. An X=4.0 OHV V6, An E=4.0 SOHC V6, A P=5.0 V8. Any decent repair manual (including Haynes/Chiltons) should have this information.

Curious: what year Explorer? SOHC wasn't available before '97, and OHV was discontinued '00 or '01 or somewhere in there.

Its an 01 Ranger. Thats what was confusing, Ford stopped using the OHV in 2000 and when I do a search for filters/etc it would ask VIN E or VIN X. Here is an example from Purolator's web site...

That's pretty normal for aftermarket parts companies. Every now and then someone will come on the Explorer forum and say, "I went to buy ball joints (or other front end part) for my 1st gen Explorer and they asked if I have a Dana 28 TTB or a Dana 35 TTB front end." The answer, of course, is "Dana 35" because that's all Explorers came with.

Probably has to do with how they manage their databases. They probably prefer to spend their money and time keeping up with essential changes/additions to the data base rather than worrying about asking someone an extra question because an option was discontinued.

Vin confusion

New to site.

The vin on the truck I just bought is F10ECJA7023.

My Ford buddy says F10 is a 2wd truck, but mine is 4wd
then he says that E was not even a corresponding 4th letter.
C meant that it was made in Canada.
And for the last 6-he has no clue.

Dont really care but the seller said it was a 1980 F100 Ranger and just curious about the Vin.

Any help would be great!
glad to be a Ford owner by the way.

See your other thread in the 1980/86 F100 and larger truck forum for info.
