CarQuest coolant filtration?

The local CarQuest dealer is selling a CarQuest filtration system, no hoses or engine fittings, for $20. It is a spin on canister unit and comes with the filter mount, 1 cartridge (order with or without SCA charge) and some hose fittings for the mount. I can put the whole thing together for about $40 and will probably have to make a steel bracket for the mount. (powdercoated of course )

Anyone looked, heard about or used this system? pros - cons?

i am sure it is the same system that napa offers with a cast iron filter head and some fittings. works great! i pretty much just used the head then plumbed everything else from what i have in the shop. check my gallery to see what i have. it is an OBS so it will be a bit different but not much.

for the info...When I went to NAPA, just got a blank stare.... CarQuest just had a pic from their catalog but it looked more like a Racor head, maybe cast aluminum? The 90º hose fittings did look the same though. I figure with a simple bypass system on coolant, I wouldn't need somthing real fancy.

Now I have to do some research on where to tap the inlet and outlet.

This is how I did mine. Just use the unused threaded boss with the plug in it on the water pump.

Sent another PM. Hope it works. I'm not the brightest bulb in the box when it comes to this puter.

I would put the link here but I tried that before and it didn't work.

Looks like you just tapped into the expansion tank return line, correct?

Much easier than the other way I was looking at.
Where is the best place to buy. Carquest here quoted me $44.00
Napa had same catolog and quoted same price. This is without the filter.

OK, I picked up the coolant filter and let me start out by saying the counter guy screwed up with the quote yesterday. He quoted me fleet pricing. I stuck to my guns and made him honor the quote he gave me. The list price on the base unit was $76.11 and the price I got was $20.15. Wow, what a markup!
The filter base (they have it listed as 'conversion base') #CFI 89019
Filter element - non-SCA charged since I run the gold: #CFI 89070 $5.95 (list - $22.48 (nobody pays this!)
3/8 hose, fittings, 12 clamps and I walked away for $56.52 including tax.

They have both SCA and non-SCA filters. The 89070 spin-on is 5 1/4" tall x 3 3/4 in dia. They have a shorter spin-on and I may go to it after running the larger one for a year. The base is painted a turquoise-green color - that's gonna go for sure, and is machined cast iron. Very heavy piece. The casting has a number, 111103/1 cast into it and is probably the same part many other vendors sell.
