I managed to not have to deal with the emissions testing last year by buying my sticker early . This year I will have to deal with it though.

Anyone had any problems with chips, tuners, exhaust or any other mods in davidson county?

Do they just plug into the ccomputer or do they sniff the exhaust?

Just currious, will have to buy sticker soon.

I've had to deal with California emissions standards and equipment before - if you run into a jam with it holler at me. What year and engine are you running?

Ain't no way Tennessee Emissions Standards are going to be as tight fisted as they were.

 

I agree, CA will certainly be tougher than TN.

Depends on the year, my 99 E-350 has to go this year, SOB's changed the law, GVWR is 10,000 now, was 8,500, I believe they plug it in. Basically the plug in ones, if the check engine light isn't on, it should pass, because it reads what the machine loads from it, if it's reading rich it'll throw up the light. They aren't doing it for clean air, it's for the money, I get pissed every time I see construction sites with roaring, smoke belching tree fires, purposely set instead of cutting it up for lumber. Damn corporations can pollute the water and air, not to forget the Teflon in our blood (causes cancer in rats), don't want the public to pollute with their cars.

 

Diesels should still be exempt for a long time - I don't think even the California tree-huggers will get anywhere with restricting big trucks.

That was why I bought a diesel while I was stationed there, the base was going to force me to get California emissions done on a Tennessee truck in order to get a naval station decal - and I said: "WELL KISS MY BEE - HIND!!!"

(That was why when I first posted about the F-250 I called it "Greywolf's REVENGE")

Yep. diesels get tested, if it had a cat from the factory, you gotta put it back on. They saw the run on diesel purchases when gas went outragious, they want the revenue back.

 

I can't say what might go on in Davidson County, but anyone living inside the city limits of Memphis has to get inspected - including emissions since about 1980. That's most of the reason I moved to Bartlett (half the city taxes helped as well). The last time I went through city testing, they were checking at the tailpipe. Sometimes in the past that was all they inspected.

I thought we were going with county wide inspections a few years ago, but it petered out.

 

In "T" county they leave you alone. Send your check to "Pam Deen" and everything is cool. I have registered more vehicles by mail than I can think of.

But change is coming, I know it. You would think they would worry about efficiency - not wasting energy on "CLEAN UP" options, but there it is.

(TRUTH: Emissions control systems such as the Air Injection Reaction system waste power thinning out the CO2 and other wastes in the exhaust gases)

But at least it isn't like California. If you had a horse and buggy there, I bet they'd stick a probe in it to determine how much methane it produced by indigestion...

 

They mirror under the vehicle first, to be certain there is a cat if applicable, if not, fail, if there is, they put the smog tube in the tailpipe, but newer vehiocles have on board emission testing devices, they just plug into the port under the dash to recieve their needed information.
I beat it out on my lifted 78 F-150, antique tags, last a lifetime and no testing, don't get it out on the road anyway.

 

the diesel is different I do believe. They do a cat check then a idle to 1500 I believe and thats it. but if its a new ps they do the on board and well if you have a good tuner (illegal in all states) it will send "perfect" data to the uplink

I once swore that I'd never own anything made after 1972 because of the emissions junk. I'm thinking about another set of wheels, and that is heavy on my mind.

In theory - the day of the test you should be able to lean it out and blow they dang minds with the low emissions.

DO NOT say a word about it at the test station. They'll figure it's just another truck.

If any questions are raised - you bought it used and have no idea what was done to it.

 

BS, a friend put a 90 LT-1 in his 78 Formula Firebird, swapped out the TBI for an Edelbrock intake and carb, they failed him because his numbers were TOO LOW, told him it wasn't putting out enough, there is no minimum to my knowledge.
I've heard of people who have gone, passed with flying colors, but when the testor remembered to cat check, they fail for it not being there, if they pass without it WTF do they need it for.
I want to put real tags on the F-150, but it's not running well enough to pass, damn Holley thinned my oil. Looking to finish getting the engine tuned, then take it in to testing, I'll see about tagging it then for everyday use.
