1989 Ranger Engine Swap

I HAVE RECENTLY ACQUIRED ANOTHER AEROSTAR AWD VAN THAT HAD BEEN SMASHED..I HAVE A QUESTION. I WANT TO PUT THE 4.0LTR ENGINE FROM THE AEROSTAR INTO MY 1989 RANGER 2WD...THERE IS A 2.9LTR THERE NOW..WHAT KIND OF PROBLEMS MIGHT I RUN INTO IN THIS VENTURE? THE ENGINES LOOK PRETTY MUCH THE SAME, BUT SOME PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THAT THE 4.0 LTR WILL FIT IF IT ISN'T OUT OF AN AWD VAN...??????
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN??

Some Areos were all wheel drive but I can't see how that would effect the fit of the engine, the ECU might have a problem without the AWD tranny. You will need the electronics for the 4.0, the 2.9s won't work.

Well That's Good To Hear...no Problem With The Ecu..i Have All That And I Assume I'll Have To Change The Fuel Pump Too...but Will My Flywheel Bolt Up To The 4ltr? I Have A Standard Tranny In The Ranger And I'd Like To Keep It That Way...

I'll have to defer to someone else on the tranny/flywheel fit question.

If the Aerostar is an auto you will probably need a flywheel from a standard. Also check to see if you need a pilot bearing.

Auto's do not use a flywheel, they use a driveplate. The clutch bolts to the flywheel, the drive plate bolts to the torque convertor. 1 of my 4 Rangers is a 94 with a 4.0L with a standard.

Oops!!, I'm sorry, I must have been reading your question wrong. Me bad. In answer to your question----I don't know, but I would think that as long as the transmissions are interchangable so would the flywheel. Hope you find your answer. At least I've bumped you back to the top for awhile. Call a parts store and see if the flywheel is the same number on both motors.

Yes, you can use the 2.9 flywheel but you'll need the starter off the aerostar.
