Depends on where you are driving.
If your existing filter historically needed changing a lot because it is very dusty in your neck of the woods than the K&N may not be the right choice as it is a more open filter that will let a lot of that dust pass right thru your engine and possibly reduce engine live.
I live on the west coast and have seen very little filter contanmination so I did decided to go for the K&N.
K&N filters are the standard in boats and fishing vessels where there is little to no air contamination.
Bottom line, the K&N will improve things, including fuel milage if used in the proper application.

You don't expect a dirt bike engine to run for over 300 thousand miles either.
I had a K&N on my original motor.
I had to replace the engine at 280,000 miles because I could not dump the oil in as fast as it burnt it.
From experience, as soon as you run through enough dust to soak the oil on the filter up, the rest of the fine stuff goes right through the filter.
If you run in much dust you will have to service the filter every day.
I went back to paper and change it every oil change at 3000 miles, filters are a lot cheaper than an engine.
