Red face Need help on the 4.0 OHV to SOHC swap wiring

I have swap in process..
Explorer
1998 SOHC to 1999 OHV

What I am doing is puting the 1998 4.0 SOHC in the 1999which originally had a 4.0 OHV in it .

I am taking the complete powertrain from the 1998 SOHC and puting it in the 99. I am switching the computer and the engine harness over, plus all of the trans wiring. My question is do I have to switch any other harneses?
The one I am concerned with is the big one that plugs into the firewall.. it goes to the engine and also has all of the other underhood wiring connected.. that would be a big job.. Even though the plug is the same..I have noticed that it has a few different pins in it. Anyone been there??? Please help!!

hey thanks.. after I took another look at that big plg ..it seems that the plug is mounted 180' off from the 4.0 OHV to the 4.0 SOHC..so all I have to do is take it off of the locating bracket and turn it 180'.. then guess what..all the pins line up except there are 2 extra ones on the 1999.... I hope it works!!

Exclamation Nobody told me about PATS

I got this all done ..no start... Luckily I have the donor vehicle here in my yard. I think if I take the PATS module and the key cylinder from it it will go? Will try this today... I hope that will do it...anybody know of anything else I will run into??

I saw a post about repinning the harness ...I wont have that trouble will I?

98 OHV into 98 OHV

I am just trying to install a replacement engine into my nephews 98 Explorer, when did Ford do away with supply and return lines? The original engine date is 12/97 and the replacement is dated 5/98 but has no return line. What did you do to add the line short of changing the fuel rail?
The engine/transmission harnesses are also different or should I say non-exsistent, there are no trans hookups on the engine harness. My only answer for this is donor was not a 4X4? Thanks in advance for any info.

Yes they changed the lines sometime between 1998 to 1999 I guess not sure when. I changed the line and sender and everything PITA. But I had too because I was swapping a OHV to a OHC. You could swap the fuel rails I think. Ford also changed the Engine harness one year included the trans plugs the other had a separate trans harness that plugged into the engine harness, I think the older had the separate harness. you can use either setup they both work . hope this helps

im doin the same thing for my wife. she had a 98 2d v6 auto explorer. then we needed a 4d due to additions to the family. a friend had a '00 explorer 4d v6 with cracked heads he was willing to give me. i didnt realize it was ohv at first because the heads had been removed. so i swapped the engine and tranny with everything attached to the 2000. only when i got to reconnecting the fuel lines did i realize the difference, with the sohc have 2 lines and the ohv having 1. so now im wondering what i have to do to finish this. can i just swap the fuel pump over to the 2000 and bring the fuel line over or is it a lot more. it was supposed to be an easy engine/tranny swap but now it is looking like a much bigger headache and i definitely need some help or advice. ive been trying to find out more about this but no one seems to actually finish these swaps anywhere ive looked. if you finished yours i would love to know what extra work you had to do to finish. this is the biggest project ive done so far and am really out of my depth here. thanks

I just swapped the fuel rail to work with what was in the vehicle. It works fine and has been going strong since the swap. Hope this helps
