Any cheap and easy 460 HP gains?

I am looking for some cheap and rather simple HP gains in a 460. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Things like old tricks, timing, etc... I know that alot of the older ford guys have alot of little tricks up their sleeves!
Thank You

What year of 460? I am assuming you currently have a stock setup in a ford truck.

A lot of guys will swap in a pre-1971 timing set to get a little extra power. The later timing sets were retarded a few degrees for emissions but it also cost some power. The stock Ford exhaust is very restrictive so headers will really help (as opposed to the stock manifolds) and some port work on the exhaust ports of the heads will make a big difference too. This can be as simple as shaving the bumps out of the ports or as elaborate as sending your heads to a professional porter to really open them up (not a cheap option though). A change of cam can also help, so long as you get one that's suited to your driving style and engine. There's a ton of info on this in the 460 forum of FTE: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/f...splay.php?f=53

I guess it depends on your definition of "cheap".

I swapped the stock manifold and carb with a matched Edelbrock set (Performer 460 manifold and 750 Performer carburator). Then I topped it off with a K&N 4"X14" open air cleaner. All told these three ran about $600.00 from Jegs.

Hedders (Hedman Elite) ran $330.00 or so. New exhaust with a two-into-one FlowMaster ran another $300.00

Straight-up timing set (Cloyes) runs anywhere from $30.00 for economy/stock to $100.00 for true-roller. I opted for true-roller.

So, for about $1,300.00 I have a pretty decent 460 without tearing it down.

Just a thought...

I have a '72 460 from a lincoln continental in a '79 ford 1/2 ton... As of now it is internally stock except dual springs, edelbrock aluminum highrise intake, and a mild cam... anymore ideas...one issue is that I can't really fit headers unless they run ouside the frame. Is there somewhere I can find headers to fit inside the frame(tight squeeze)4 speed trans

I also have a 460 that is .030 over waiting to be rebuilt...

yeah I can give you one really good idea right now, change the heads. if it's truely a 72 and not a PI then it has the D2VE heads and without a doubt those are absolutly the worst heads for a big block ford. If you have done any reading you will find that I usually tell people to run the D3VE heads and this has caused some rather interesting discussions or aurguments if you will be on that engine I don't care what heads you go with as long as you change them.

I have already changed the heads on the .030 over block to D0VE-C heads...not sure how good they are, but so far I haven't noticed much difference... another question...Carburator? I have a 650 edelbrock as of now...is it not enough?

Edelbrock recommends a 750 cfm for 460s. 650 will probably work...just not optimally. You might play around with the jetting...and a 1" or 2" carburator spacer might help too.

Opinions on brand? I had a 1" on and it helped, I had a 2" on and it was even better yet, but when I went with anything bigger it seemed to be too much, is this true?

best brand of spacer is the HVH supersucker spacers these things really work at improving the signal the carb recieves, enough so that I had to jet my carb down 4 jet sizes when I added on to the race truck, and it definatly made a difference in the power of the engine. You can get them in both 1" and 2" but I will tell you in advance for a spacer they ain't exactly cheap, about $90 as I recall

I believe I saw a set of inside the frame headers at the jeffsbroncograveyard website, they were made by L &L products which specifies in 460 swaps. So you could probobly look up either place on the web and find them.
