Newy with some questions.

I'm in the market for a 2000 f150, I will be using the truck mostly for daily commute and ocasionally loading and towing stuff.
Is there a big difference betwen the 4.2L and the 4.6L in MPG for a daily commuter. I'm looking to buy an xlt ext cab auto 4x2. Thanks for all your help.

I would go with the v8, I hear that the minimum engine to tow with is the 4.6, with the 5.4 being the best. I get marginal to terrible gas mileage in the city compared to people who own 4.6's. I'm no expert tho, just my thoughts.

Mike,
Assuming you keep the weight reasonable, and get a 3.55 rear end, the 4.2 will work fine for occasional towing.
I've pulled boats (up to a 22 foot center console - approx 3300#) and motorcycles on trailers, etc. and had nary a problem.

As far as MPG, I dont think there is enough difference for it to be a consideration really.

I had a 2000 F150 with the 4.2, 5 speed and 3.55 rear end. It did exactly what you describe for 170,000 miles.
I now have a 2005 with the 4.2 and it is doing the same thing all over.

Mike,

I owned a 2003 4.2 with 5,000 miles new. It was a 5-speed, regular cab, sport edition truck. (basically the "most fuel efficient" one) I AVERAGED 12 to 13 mpg's in town, and I didn't drive too fast either. Highway was about 16 to 17, and there are no differences in 2000 or 2003.

I then traded it in for a 2001 4.6 supercab (ext. cab) auto, and it had 65k when I bought it. It got the EXACT same mileage. The V8 will always be better for towing, but if you aren't towing very much, the 4.2 does just fine.

Also, be sure you know what gearing the 4.2 has before you buy it. Usually it will be 3.55's in the rear, but if you get the 3.08 gearing, your mileage WILL be better, but your towing will really suck.

Hope this helps!
