stereo installation

I am putting a new stereo in to replace an older aftermarket one. The plastic piece that goes around everything in the center of the dash needs to be removed correct? Is this just held in with clips?

If its like my 98, there are a couple vertical screws above the climate control. Its also easier to pull that console if you pull the radio out first, using 4 small nails or the regular pullers to disengage the clips on the double DIN unit.

Check Crutchfields Web Site. They have many resources available on-line on how to get the radio out for whatever vehicle.

If you are replacing just the head unit, I don't believe you need to remove the trim. The radio just slides out as 98xlt states. There should be no reason to remove the trim piece. Crutchfield is a good resource and where I've bought my last couple of head units.

The one that is in it now is an aftermarket HU and has the little storage compartment above it. Do you think the aftermarket one will come out just the same? I am worried about something breaking since everything is plastic.

Likely the aftermarket unit also slides in and requires a special tool to remove that is different than the Ford tool. At least this is the way mine have worked. The plastic piece with the storage compartment should come out easily after you have remove the head unit. Still shouldn't require you to remove the plastic piece or bezel. If I were you, I'd go by a stereo shop and see if they'll remove the head unit for you. It only takes a couple of minutes.
