I am looking at buy a 97-02 f150 4x4 supercab just wanting some input on the difference on what you guys are getting on gas mileage between the 4.6l v8 and the 5.4l
Any input would be appreciated.

On the highway I get approx. 18-22 mpg, that is driving nice. That is with 285/75-16 tires on it too. In town it is terrible, and I havent figured it out yet, cause if I do I will probably cry!

Weight, aerodynamics and driving style will effect fuel mileage, much, MUCH more than the difference between the 5.4 and 4.6 engines.

Good luck,

When I drove my 97 home from Denver, I got 23.2 mpg running 55 mph between Denver, and Amarillo. It has the 4.6L engine. The last tank, which was primarily city type driving, came back at 18. I am one that most of the time, tries to get the best mileage possible out of the vehicle that I'm driving.

I run my '02 supercrew 5.4 with a Borla cat back exhaust, K&N filter, and run Amsoil synthetic throughout. Best I have done on the highway is 22mpg & 14 around town.

If you ask me, 15.5 is pretty damn good for mixed driving with a 5.4!

The truck I'm going with is a 98 supercrew 3 door with every option except leather with only 50,000miles for $11,000. I think I'm doing alright.

i've got an 01 4.6 L 5 spd shorbed......i get consistantly 18 mpg and 20 if i'm on the highway.....now on here you'll hear controversey about this topic because some guys only get 12 or only 14..... if your looking for 25 mpg then your looking in the wrong place unless you get some 4 banger ranger or something like that.......these motors arn't that bad on gas and seams like they will last forever and their not bad at all when compared to CHEBY AND DODGE

I was just checking if there was a big difference between the 4.6l vs. the 5.4l. But I'll be hauling my enclosed car hauler sometimes so I'm going to go with the 5.4l plus I can't beat the deal i'm getting on the truck anyway.

I have a 98 F150 SC 4X2 5.4L 3.55 rear end. During Christmas break I went from Edmonton Aberta to Winnipeg Manitoba and back (2600 Km) with 4 in the cab and the box full of gear. I averaged 20 mpg cruisin at 108 kph. That's the best I've ever got. I have a Roll-in-lock box cover. When I used to have a cab high canopy I averaged around 18 mpg on the highway. I think the box cover creates less drag than the canopy.
