Fuel Filter Question

Guys I bought a new filter for my 02 ford supercrew 5.4. When i took the old filter off it looks nothing like the motorcraft filter i purchased. the motor craft filter is much larger in diameter. My question is that what is the filter number that goes on this truck? I purchased, based on info i gave, a Motorcraft FG872. Please let me know if this isnt correct. THanks

According to motorcraft.com, the part number is FG872. You have the right one. Will it fit the stock retaining bracket? it should fit.

HEY! Lastnite i was servicing my dads 2001 F150 super crew with the 5.4, i changed the oil and filter, air filter, and tried to change the fuel filter, but the filter was too large! I Work for Cummins, so im a fleetguard distributor, so i ran in the back and checked your numbers. The FG986 is the right one, its a little longer, and smaller round!

You need to use a Fuel line disconnect tool. They can be picked up in any auto parts store. I believe it is a 5/16".

I actually used the larger fuel filter in mine. I pulled down on the bracket and it closed on it nicely. It has the same ends as the smaller one.

I CAN NOT get that dern thing off!!!!

It has a clip on each side, and i pop those off, and slide them outa the way, i got one of the quick disconnect tools, pop it over the line, and push it in to the line, and i push, twist, and everything, and i cant get it off???
Do i need to push the line on farther while pushing the tool in, or do i pullon it the whole time?
Does dirt and stuff get in there?
HELP!!!

Keep Trying

My 98 F-150 has that same filter connection. It takes a bit of messing around with it but when you get it right the filter pulls right off. don't force anything. Push the disconnet tool all the way in and pull the filter off with the tool in place. Once you do it once you'll get the feel of it. You can bang on some things but not the filter.

Bang, bang, bang. Bang whatever you want. Just make sure if you do "bang" on it....it doesn't come back with daddy holding a shotgun!

84Maztang, Here is what i noticed, when you insert the disconnect tool, all the way, do not try to pull the line off with it. Insert it fully into the line and let go, then pull the line itself. I was having trouble such as yours but I realized that I was trying to pull the line off with the disconnect tool. Hope this is clear.

Going nuts

Truck is on stands and I'm working away right now. The line from the tank to the filter disconnected right away, no problem at all.

The line out of the filter on to the engine refuses to come off. I've spent something like two hours (!) on it. The disconnect tool is obviously not sliding all the way in, almost like the fitting on the hose is slightly out of round. If I open the tool up and use one half of it, it goes much farther in (but that won't get the hose to disconnect so it's not much help.

I tried beveling the edge of the tool slightly, no dice. Used a mirror to check it out and it looks OK but I'm getting ready to put a little squirt of wd40 or suchlike in there, see if it dissolves a bit of crap.
