Scary pics of my 11,000 mile-old EGR valve

I've been reading the EGR discussions this week and decided to get a can of brake cleaner and some gasket material and have a look at how the little troublemaker was doing on my truck.

A bit of leverage and it popped right out

Pretty scary to see how gunked up the thing can get in such a short amount of time. I bought the truck in July ('05 F-350) and have just over 11K on the odometer. In case anyone is curious, the truck uses Mobil Delvac 1 and has had Stanadyne in every tank since about 1,500 miles.

If you are going to clean your EGR valve, don't make the mistake of only buying one can of brake cleaner - you'll need lots! That and a firm toothbrush seemed to do the trick. For those of you who would rather make your own gaskets than overpay for them, the material is the laminate type that you find used in an exhaust manifold application. Just make a donut shaped piece with inside diameter 1.325" and outside diameter 1.825".

I am going to add "clean out the EGR valve" to my every 10,000 mile maintenance items.

Thanks, I was thinking of doing the same thing. I have an 05 F350 CC 6.0, am also at about 12000 miles. I have only used 2 tanks of Howe's and 2 tanks of the new FM-18 from ford. Would be a good comparision.

Is there a gasket you have to replace or do you just use liquid gasket?

mhoefer - I updated the original post with the gasket info. Mine didn't tear, so I reused it.

satcom - it certainly was a wet, gooey mess. Unburnt, oily diesel fuel, I assume?

GREAT POST....Thanks. I have always wondered if cleaning it was a good idea and now I know....I wonder what it would have been like with out an additive?

Did you clean out the cavity it was in? (vaccuum)

Where did you get the gasket material? I can get different thicknesses of material used in our steam power station for gaskets. It's old trade name is druabula. I've used it for exhaust gaskets before. The real good stuff had asbestos; too bad that's gone. Thanks again and good luck to all

Was the engine hot or cold when you pulled the valve? Which way would be easier with the engine hot or cold to remove the valve?

Tim,

This is probably a good thread for a sticky or the tech folder. I had no idea the EGR would crap up that quickly.

Anyone know if soaking it in parts cleaner or at least the bottom part would dissolve this or hurt anything?

I have been running Power Service Diesel Kleen since 1500 miles (now have 3500). It sure would be interesting if someone with about 10-12k miles and has NOT used an additive would pull theirs and takes some pics for comparison.

I thought it was going to have 8 EGR's? I hope there will be a way to disable them...and if there isn't, this is going to be a major pain in the ass to service every 10,000 miles. Great post, thanks!

Yep. If that's what it's going to take to keep the engine clean, and running efficiently, then so be it I guess. Don't forget the soot trap they're throwing on it as well. That'll be fun. Wonder what kind of aftermarket exhausts are going to be offered.
