Also the door key said it was an h5 are these 4:10 gears?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Door Key ???????
I think you mean the rating (or data) plate
Which would mean it isn't a 79 as that code doesn't apply to that year.
Usually an H series axle is a 9"
Later in the 90's an H5 = 4.10. 3800 FORD LIMITED SLIP 1991
Does the diff have an inspection cover on the back ?
How many studs on the axles ?
In 1977 H5 is the code for a heavy duty truck Rockwell R-171 23000# 5.29 ratio axle. H5 is not a valid code for a 77 light duty truck. H2, H4, and H9 are valid codes for 77 light duty trucks, all 9" locking axles. H1-9 are all used for 77 HD truck Rockwell axles. HH and HQ are used in medium duty trucks for Eaton axles. Not much of a way to get an Eaton or Rockwell confused with a 9".
to solve the mistery,pull the cover off the diff and read what the ring gear says.then you will know for sure the gear ratio,and if the diff is limited slip,or opened.by removing the cover,you will be able to see if the diff needs work,or if it would be okay to just install it. at this age ,you dont even know if the door plate matches the actual diff anymore.-billy
