99 Ranger 2.5L towing
I replaced my F150 with a Ranger 2.5 L four and 5 speed man. I will be towing my Starcraft tent camper that weighs 2700# about 100 miles at a time. I know that this will be working the little dog. Ford says I can use 5w20. But truck has had 5w30 for since new and now has 76k on it. I want an oil that will stand up well to the abuse but not be too thick, I feel thinner oil will help cool better? I have been thinking about Motorcraft blend 5w30 but cannot find up todate specs. Is this a good choice or should I look else where.
Thanks Dan

i would use the 5w30 as long as it meets ford 929a spec you will be fine and it will be at minimum a synthetic blend. i am not a big fan of the sm rated motorcraft the trop artic has the better GP III basestock.
Trop artic
Pennzoil
Chevron/havoline
castrol
valvoline
in no paticular order just use what ever is cheaper. the Chevron , havoline and pennzoil all have lots of moly.

99F150 ,
I would use an oil thats backward compatible to at least API SJ . Some of these newer API SM's are only backward compatible to SL .
The Mobil Clean 5000 and Clean 7500 go back to SJ and carry the diesel oil CF designation behind them . Both are very good engine oils and are commonly available .

The Mobil 5w-30 High Mileage goes back to SJ also and still carries the CF .

Look at the zinc by weight of the Trop Artic High Mileage oil . It should have over 1000 parts per million vs 600 ppm of most API SM's . The Kendall High mileage should be the same .

Just showing some alternatives in a smaller gasoline engine friendly viscosity .

For just a bit more cost per oil change the 7500 is a better choice vs the 5000 IMO and better than some over the counter so called synthetics in bang for buck .
From the Mobil website :
Mobil Clean 7500 is a synthetic blend formulation with a boosted level of cleaning performance, 18 percent beyond the level of even our premium Mobil Clean 5000 conventional motor oil, to keep your engine cleaner longer.
There are alot of oils that would work for you and I've listed a few .
Good luck !

Thanks DOHC and gas hog. After talking with a Tropartic tech support rep yesterday I decided to try the Tropartic synthetic blend 5W30. I found a local farm and fleet retailer that sells it for $1.69 every day, Walmart has it for $1.48 but never have any 5W30.
I asked the tech support rep if this oil used "moly" and was told NO the only moly in the oil would be a by product. I was told that there are much better additives than moly and that Tropartic uses a poloymer instead. The base oil is made of Group II+ and the syn part is group III, the group III comes from Korea. I was also told that Oil formulations will most likely be changing every two years now, gas engine oil one year and diesel oil the next.
I also put a FL1A filter on and filled with 5 quarts as I cannot see any valid reason for the smaller FL400 filter and reduced oil capacity.
Also the numbers on the PDS sheet are wrong and they are in process of updating. Here are the correct specs for the 5W30
Flash point- 223c
pour point- -44F
vis. @ 40c 61.3
vis. @ 100c 10.7
vis. index 166
cold crank vis. @ -30c 4500
high temp high shear 3.0
sulfated ash % weight .97
TBN 7.3
Phosphours 770ppm
Zinc 860ppm
calcium 2020ppm
Moly 0
