I've heard farm estate auctions are a good place to find decent trucks. Often the farmers have had them since new and use them as their "town car."

Where do you look for used fords?

 

You hit it on the head where we look for em', we also just keep an open eye out when going anywhere, as thats when you normally find the neat finds, and alberta is one of the best places to find em too, as we have the highest muscle/classic/custom vehicle per capita then any other place in the world.

 

Used to comb the fields between Okotoks and the 49th parallel for them, but got run off by too many farm dogs. Every truck I ever actually bought (although I found tons of them by simply bird hunting/driving around gravel roads) was from the newspaper or word of mouth,except one.
My favourite one, a '40 half ton I should have NEVER sold, was from an estate auction sale. Best ones to go to are mid-week ones, ones on weekends there are too many rich guys buying antiques for their cabin there.

 

When ever a neat Ford truck is coming up at an auction it seems I can`t get away. One of the few times I could go ended up buying a 57 F350 in nice rust free condition, of course I did pay more then I had in mind. It had been stored in side and everything works. Put a new w/s and an up graded carb/intake so it runs great now. Last Dec. I bought a 71 F350 and need to sell the 57 if I can find a good home for it..Hate to sell it just yet.

 

So, where can i find out about farm auctions? I don't want to read the obituaries, too creepy . . . I'm in the big city, pretty removed from rural life.

 

A western Canadian weekly farm paper called The Western Producer has auction listings. The internet for a local seach. It will be afew months, March into April before any auctions are happening but some listings are out now. What are you looking for?

77, I was living in Calgary when a buddy of mine called me about the auction I got my '40 at in Warner, on a Wednesday. Had to take a day off to go to it. Pays to keep your rural roots LOL

in addition to all the good advice here, you can try the Trader publications, the under $2000 ? is it? one and the truck trader have lots. Get the heck out of Dodge (or Calgary) if looking for one that isn't eaten by salt tho. Try Trochu, Olds, Three hills, Drumheller, Medicine Hat , Stettler and Oyen areas for areas where there may be gold sitting behind a barn.

Also depends what you are looking for year-wise. Want another 77, there are millions of them still on the road everywhere but Calgary and Edmonton where the salt monster eats them.

Yep the western producer is the one to look in as well as the adviser (second link in the post above) for the farm auction.

 

I had luck by finding the list of local auction companies, they list items at each sale.

 

Speak up on what year you are looking for, and how far you are willing to go for it.

within a 15-18 hr road trip from Calgary you could try:

-Hooking up your trailer and heading East on the #1 highway. Near Medicine Hat and between Moose Jaw and Regina I saw about 20 old Fords and Mercs for sale on the highway last time I drove down East. Years-49-72, mostly 2WD.

-Heading straight south. Between Pocatello Idaho and Boise Idaho there are 60's & 70's 4x4s growing wild like mushrooms in people's yards. In fact west of Boise almost everyone has about 20 old cars in their yard. A virtual goldmine area. You might try even heading further south toward Salt Lake city. Seen lots around there too.

-If you are looking for a Refrigerator..(57-60) the best place I have seen for those is north-east of Billings Montana in the absolute middle of nowhere. Never seen so many of those old fridges in one area.

and, if you are into Slicks (61-66) Washington is supposed to be filthy with them. This from a buddy in Hinton, who went on holidays and came home with one on a rented trailer, behind his motor home!

 

Well, what I'm looking for is a 67-72 or 73-77 Higher trim level 2wd truck (ranger, lariat etc.) A F100 or 150 would be best, as I don't need heavy duty. Body work is a pain, so I'd prefer if it had sound sheetmetal, although I could do a coat or two of paint.

I'm just in the process of buying a house and moving, so depending on the storage situation at the new place, I'd love a 4x4 73-79 to play with. For that one, mechanical would need to be sound, but body would be unimportant.

All in all, I may be looking to buy something this summer or spring.
