Anyone swap in an FE instead of small block?

Anyone swap in an FE instead of small block?
I am currently looking to buy a 72 short bed 2wd that has a small block in it. I want to swap in an FE as my 71 4x4 has the same. I want both to be FE powered. I was curious if the perches are the same for both setups? Meaning I would only have to buy different motor mounts for the swap? Anyone know what the swap would consist of? Thanks in advance.. Stan

The perches for the small block will fit 289, 302, 351W, 351C, 351M and 400. They are almost the same height. The perches that you need will fit 240, 300, 360, and 390. One perch in this set is almost twice as tall as the other one. I pulled a 302 out of my truck and put a 390 in, so I know all about this swap. I think I have a picture of the different stands in my gallery.

Thanks for the info. And the pics helped out alot too. As far as the 385 series go, Im guessing those are different mounts than both of these setups? I know there aftermarket mounts for the 385 series anyhow, but I really want to go FE powered. Are there any newer style aftermarket mounts for the FE? On my 71 4x4 The engine torques over and rips the rubber off the mounts all the time. I have to replace them quite often. For now I have the engine chained/cabled down to the frame so it doesnt torque as much... Stan

Stan,
You are correct. The 385 series 429/460 are a 3rd mount. The 385 series is a completely diferent designed mount than the other 2. I don't know of any aftermarket mounts for the FE. You might try checking with the guys over in the FE engine forrum on that one. Last but not least, I want to give an opinion on your swap. My truck is actualy a 73. All of the above mentioned stands will work for any 2 wheel drive truck from 65 to 79. My 73 originaly had a 240. I swapped in a 302. Then I went to a 390, and now I have a 460. All of the engines I had in my truck had advantages as well as disadvantages. Out of these engines the 390 was my favorite, and the 302 was my least favorite. A 302 may be great for the mustangs, but they have no place in a truck. If there is any thing else you need answered about a swap, feel free to ask away.
