Tire reccomendations

My father currently has a 2000 F150 4x4 and is looking fo a set of tires.. I tried to have him get the BFG AT's but he doesn't want to spend $180 per tire.. I found a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers, in the stock size (265/70/17) for $120 which he is ok with.. QUestion is, WHat ply is it?? It does not say on the web site.. Also, it only shows a "P" rating as well so I am a bit skeptical of... DOes anyone have experience with this particular size or have any tire reccomendations I can look for???

Thanks in advance

P rating will be a passenger tire, which is a 4 ply. When you get up into 6 plys, they start to get alot more expensive. Also for that size of tire, p series is very common, as for 6 plys, they arent as common yet.

Thats what I thought...Do you think they would be ok on a truck that only sees an occasional trip to camp and very little load carrying??

I like the BFG Long Trail T/A's. They are good in the snow/rain and have a long tread life. Sam's club has good prices on them. I use them on my 01 in the same size, 265/70R17.

Yes they would do just fine on your truck. Most people could get away with 4 ply tires. It is just when you start carrying stuff all the time, or hauling when you need the extra plys.

I agree. Most trucks, unless they are 3/4 ton or over even have LT tires. They have a much stiffer sidewall which is unnecesary for 99.9% of us half tonners. I'm a huge fan of the Toyo A/T Open Country's as I had several sets. Put them on my '03 STX 4X4 with 9,000 miles because I couldn't stand the RT/S.

I agree with LxMan1, the BFG Long Trail is a great tire for the F150. I have a set on my 01 4x2 and have taken those tires over some very rough terrain on the trails outside of Silverton, CO. Excellent perfromance and great on the highway as well. Since most of your driving is not off road, the Long trail is a good choice. They are about 140 per tire in the San Diego area, at Costco.

I bought some Dueller A/T 's for about a $100 a tire off of Tirerack.com last Feb.

I think they are a great tire and wouldnt hesitate to buy them again!

I am using Wild County T/R load range D on my F-150. Sharp looking tires in the 285's. But any tire with big lugs in the tread do not last as long. For me it is all about appearance.

I put a set of Dayton Timberline HTs on my 98 F150 4X4. So far very pleased. Price was super at under $90 each installed. Low rolling resistance and good traction. In no hurry to see how well they wear.

I like the Bridgestone Dueler APT's, they ride a lot smoother than the Good Year Wrangler RT/S's that most of the trucks come with. I think they were about $118 at Sears.
