High Boy Power Steering - Valve Question!!

Hey guys... i havent posted in a long while but here goes the question:

i have a 73 250 highboy.. the truck has had a bendix style power assist put on it. the control valve leaks out of the stud where the pitman arm attaches (or seems to) i want to rebuild the thing but can;t find a kit anywhere. i can find a new valve for 250 bucks, but other than the one leak mine is fine. any suggestions?????

the next question is the pump is brand new. ever since day 1 it has whined liek an old beat pump. its been bled.. any thoughts?

Maybe the first thing is to spray some degreaser on it, then wash. The leak may be from the threaded ends. Look for cracks somewhere. Dennis Carpenter has a rebuild for the ball stud kit, that may solve your problem, it is found on page 13 of their catalog. The whining from your pump is because of loss of fluid. You need to check the fluid with the engine warm and running. Turn the wheel left to right and back, to release any air. If your pump still whines then you need to replece it. Excessive heat caused by low fluid ruins the bearings.

thats so much for the reply. I bought the truck with the "new" pump installed.. wouldn;t surprise me if he didn;t have it quite full and that may have messed the bearings... it definitely pumps, so the noise i can deal with. its certainly full now. it is leaking from the ball-stud boot area... not from the 4 lines where they screw in.. i solved that part of it.

where do i get a dennis carpenter catalog? this is my 6th 73-79, the only one i've ever had with power assist.. i only ever get LMC.. so i am new to this world.

Ok so i answered half of my own question. i found them online,,, sure enough, thats it on page 13. so how hard is this to do? what is the advantage to a whole rebuilt unit?

if you have some more knowledge on this i'll be much appreciative.

I have not had the luck of rebuilding, the valve, yet. I had to replce the whole thing, because of a worn unit. It cost me 200.00. If you have the time and your wife has the patience, you could get it done.

Is it leaking at the 3 bolt area, where the two pieces meet?

I would do the newer 78 79 F250 4x4 power steering conversion and never look back. You'll be glad you did.

Yes, but the best uses for the power assist is for large tire, whether you have them now or in the future. I run 33's on my truck and I would like to go to 36's. More meat is more turning resistance. With a good hydraulic assist steering you can turn those meats with one finger. I like it and just like my truck not many have (stock power assist)them. There is a new setup called the "Redneck Ram". Anywho, we all have are feticious...

the truck is in very good original type condition.. i dont really want to go to the newer style.. and retain the drum brake axle.. i'd get a 60 frn and then go all the way to converting it. i guess for now i'll look into that kit. thanks for the help guys. do you think its worth trying lucas in there? do you guys run ATF in you power assist>

I use a 2wd gear sector on these.I have not done one in about 10 years but it,s cheap and easy if you can weld.I' ve done it on 1/2 tons too.basically you make a plate with three nuts welded on it in bolt pattern of the sector. weld the plate on the inside of frame with nuts to the inside. You have to flatten your old pitman arm by v notchin it and reweldin it.If that bothers ya you can buy em that way.the pit man arm goes between the frame and the spring.these are easy ,it will steer like butter and 2wd sector are easy to get.f 150s are harder cause you have to notch the front crossmember but it can be done. This was a common cure 20 years ago.most shops had detail instructions.I stil got one. If you want I'll copy it and send it to ya.Its got a lota detail.two pages,I'll have to go dig it out.Is there a way to put on here like it is ?I think it's got some drawings.I'm not too computerized.
