351w swap info

What all would I need to swap a 351w in my 79 f150 4x4 with a 351m/c6 I would also like to keep my air conditioning so what compressor and/or brackets for that would I need? Were there ever any windsors available in a 79 pickup? What motor mounts would I need? Would 302 mounts work or is the deck height too tall on the 351 for 302 mounts? What power steering and alternator brackets are needed? Are 351 bolt pattern c6s hard to find?

-What's wrong with the 351M?
As far as I know the 351M and W had the same block type so it should bolt up fine to the c-6
-I can't really help ya' on the motor mounts/brackets because of that the Windsor motors were never an option for the trucks.

Chris just pull the AC compressor to the side, you shouldn't have to open that system at all. 302 perches will work. The M tranny will not bolt to the W, so out with it too, The small block pattern is the most plentiful of the C6s. Keep the ps pump and alt. just pull them to the side like the AC compressor. I am not sure what brackets will change but keep your eyes peeled for what might work.

I just finished a inline 6 to 351W swap. Your 351M perches will work, that's what I used in place of my I6 perches. 351W motor mounts are the same as 302 motor mounts. I don't think they put windsors in 73-79 trucks. I used an oilpan out of a van, it cleared the lower cross member no problem. you will also probably need the throtle cable out of a 302 powered truck, I did. Make sure your exhaust manifolds will work. The ones on the M wont, look at a 351W or 302W powered Crown Vic/Merc.
P/S pump, Alt and Water pump are interchangeable (I have heard of reverse flow water pumps for 351W's, so to be safe I ordered a 351W water pump for an 80 Crown vic). I went with a serpentine system I got off a Crown Vic, all brackets fit no problem. 302's are a different story, the width of the intake manifold on the 302 is 9 inches, on the 351, 11 inches, therefore, some brackets do not interchange, like the power steering bracket. If you want to keep your original compressor stick to regular belts, find a 351 powered Cr. Vic (I used a lot of parts from them cuase thare are a lot of'm in the yards)and use everything off it.

P.S, I dont know the C6 behind your 351 would work (mine's a manual), but vans starting in 79 had windsors, I would guess they had C6's, Maybe some eary crown vic's too.

Good Luck!
Jayson

I'm doing that same thing right now. You'll have to swap cases to a small block case for the tranny. The frame perches are OK, just use 302 mounts on the 351w. They showed them coming with 302's in the catalog even though my "Ford" shop manual didn't ??? Anyway, they were easy to get. Can't help on the other brackets. I'm not there yet and my A/C is aftermarket.
Good luck, Phil (64 F-100 on 79 4x4 chassis )

Nope, the M and the W have different bellhousing bolt patterns. He'd need to swap trannies.

Bill, I don't think so, bud. The 351M has the big block 8" spread on the top bolts, while the 351W uses the small block 5" spread.
Go check it out. :+

Yeah...what he said. Anyway, I got the number on the Windsor mounts. They are #2329 "Anchor" brand, but most mount part numbers are the same regardless of the brand. Later, Phil

What kinda mileage could I get with a well done windsor? It would be a ford racing short block with new heads, edelbrock performer intake, 650 carb, headers/dual 2.5 exhaust w/flowmasters, and new everything else inluding b&m c6 trans. I have 4x4, 33 inch tires, and 350 gears. Would it be easier just to do the 460 swap instead? There seems to be a lot of available parts for the 460 conversion. The reason I dont build up my 351m is there isnt many performance parts for them. If there is I just might build an m engine.

I'm sure Bill will say,"make a 400 out of it then".
As has been covered before, the 400 has tons of potential if you do it right. That now famous HOT ROD article a while back demonstrated that. That's what I would have done, had I not already built a 351w.

Orange,
The 351W is a small block! It bolts to a C-4. The 351C bolts to a C-6! The 351M does have some "high performance parts. Mainly the 400M crank! The heads can be modified at your local machine shop and if you can port you can have a wicked motor on your hands. Full length headers are availble. You own the block already and it's in your truck already, so you've got all you need already!
The Windsor is not the drug of choice in this particular situation. The Cleveland is! Cleveland heads will fit on your 351/400M you could potentially get 650HP out of a 400M with Cleveland heads and one of those 70 vintage roller cams? Will Cleveland cams interchange with M?
I'll have to research a bit more, stand by!
Good luck, Have Fun,
KingFisher

Yes Cleveland cams will fit a 351M/400. There are several good aftermarket cams designed specifically for the 400 as well. However if I were really after 650 hp I don't think the 400 would be my "drug of choice". That kind of hp co$t$ $eriou$ buck$ and if I planned to make an engine that will last I think I'd start with one of [link:www.oemfordparts.com/partdetails.asp?PartID=2302&CategoryID=11a|these] and build it up from there. But then again there's those [link:www.araoengineering.com/Ford/clevelnd.htm|32 valve C heads] out there too...hmmm.
