Yea that does make it a bit more difficult. Oil, grease and road grime don't help much either. Some WD-40, a old toothbrush, flashlight and a mag glass if you have crappy eyes like me will help uncover them if needed. Good luck and Happy Holidays to you and yours....

Now all I need is someone to hold me upside down in the engine bay, or perhaps Santa will bring me a lift, or if not a lift, a tired Tbird with a 428 and a C6! Thanks for your help, with your permission, I'll keep you posted as to what I find. Sounds like I have an oddball motor here.

I read that yesterday, looks deep, very deep. Could they have changed the oil pan?

It's time to change it anyway, I'll let you know, as soon as I find that Chevron oil! Think I can find it at the local truck stops? None of the part stores have it.

My U-Haul is a 1979 with a 330XD!

That's right, Ford made/sold 330XD's in 1979! It's not a HD or a MD, it is an XD. My 1979 (and many others) were specially made for U-Haul with some sort of hybrid FE/FT combination. It has the C7TE-C heads (with center manifold heat), standard F100/250/350 motor mounts, the cast-iron timing cover, 2V intake, and had a governor that U-Haul took off before they sold the truck. The 361 and 391's had steel cranks with 1 3/4" front snouts and other heavy-duty features. My 330 also has the large snout, which was probably originally designed (in 1964 when they were first built) to drive a power take off. My GVWR is 9900 pounds and it has dual rear wheels with a 4.11 ratio Spicer 70 rear axle. The transmission is a creeper gear 4 speed (NP435) lubed with 10W40 engine oil.

ford must have made those in 78 then because the entire plant was torn down and retooled for the 385 series engines in january of 79 and now is building the modular engines. i have never heard of a XD.

More trivia...

[By 1973 all FE and FT truck engines were manufactured at Clifford Manufacturing up north in the one-train town of Clifford Michigan, with raw castings coming out of Ford's brand new MCC. I'm not sure whether Clifford Mfg would have scaled down to continue production for U-Haul, or whether Ford would have jobbered that shop out for another engine line. I'd like to learn more - when time permits - which is not right now.]

above quote is from the Ford FE forum

Greetings:

Its me, Mr 359MD! I've been running the old girl for the last year waiting to the motor to stop, it won't! Everything else is leaking, radiator, carb etc, but it stopped running all of a sudden.

Found a Petronix kit in the dizzy and the pick up film had come loose. Two questions for you:

What dizzy fits in there? 390? If I can, and I have a new Petronix kit that was for my 65 390, but its a different configuration than the 74 359MD, can I cross referance a dizzy to fit my Pertronix from a 65 390? Make sence?

Many thanks!

AZ Billy

PS: yes its a front motor mount, what a strange motor!

I'm guessing your distributer has the larger FT distributer hole in the block. Ford made/makes a reducing bushing to adapt a (smaller shaft housing) FE distributer. Either will "work", if your engine has the bigger hole. Use a late model Motorcraft solid state dist. if you can find one (Autozone or Advance auto parts?) It would be wise to recurve either to specs. for your application.

FE would be my like my 65 390? I called the guys at Autozone, and they were like "its out of a what?!" Do you think it would be easier to take it out and have them match it? Any alterations I'm going to have to make for the solid state dizzy since its got the Petronix in it now. Remember it is in a bone stock 56 F100.

A local speed shop said they could order the rotor sleave from Petronix, but the fact that it peeled off the shaft might be do to the fact that the dizzy is worn and the clearance was now to close.

Ideas?

I would install the internal components from a solid state FE dist., which should fit in your 1974 dist., and go with a blue grommit Ford module. Otherwise, figure if it is a FE or FT dist and order a rebuilt one.

A parts store won't match it because they won't have one in stock to match.

WOW! This is a blast from the past.

Try NAPA for the FE/FT stuff. I think the website is napaonline.com. Look up parts for the F-500 or F-600 series trucks.

Good Luck!

LOL! Shes still running! All of a sudden it sounded like it swallowed a piston. I racked my brain trying to figure out whats what and when I lifed the cap, some of the Pertoronix film pick up had peeled off.

Funny you should mention Napa, I talked to one of the guys that first helped me with the 359 and he said bring down the dizzy and we'd figure out what fits. Should I try the model year the motor is, 74 F500/F600?

This thing may just run for ever!!!! Thanks for the input.
