Winter tires?

Winter tires?
My lift for my truck just came in today and I am not sure if I can wait until spring to put it on. I was wondering, what are you guys running for bigger winter tires? The lift is 6" so I would like something that is at least a 33 so it doesn't look like timbits in there. I see that BFG has the AT in 33/9.5/15. Are these good snow and icy road tires? Any suggestions?

I have a set of studded 235/85R16 General Grabber AT2's on the stock steel rims that I'm running on my diesel... It looks a little goofy, but, I like being able to to DD the thing without serious issues. Besides, the truck will go farther with these tires than it would with the swampers on... so long as there's a base to dig down to less than 3 feet down... LOL

I dont care what anyone says big tires on the street suck in the winter on snow and ice covered roads.I know i have a truck with big tires and they suck on the road in the winter the tires are 40's.I would put the stock ones on for the winter but I have 5:13 gears so I cant.Even those bfg tires are not to good in the snow the best tires for snow is a studded snow tire. But the bfg will be better than any swamper on snow and icey roads anyday.where do you live anyway???

Myself, I am ordering 33x12.50x16.5 "mud D" tires with green diamonds and I am going to use them year round. I am just trying to find a set of four used 16 or 16.5 inch 8 lug steel rims before I order the tires to fit the rims.

When I lived in MA and NH (off road a bit in Maine) for winter (especially on my vans and cars) I use to keep a set of real studded snow tires on steel rims.
So, for a winter tire, I dont see how you can go wrong with a green diamond retread tire for a truck. They have 35x12.50x15 green diamonds for $118 now :-)
I know the BFG KOs are pretty good on ice (personal experience). Don't know about the other BFGs.
I think it would probably be just about impossible to get stuck on pavement with the green diamond mud treads. Though people get H1s stuck on pavement in 12 inches of snow bank

I live in Northern British Columbia (Smithers for those of you who know where that is) and we can get some ugly road conditions. Last night I was thinking, ya I can run my 35's right now, but woke up this morning to 1/8 inch of frozen rain on everything. I am glad I put winters on my wifes Expedition
Thanks for all the help in where to look. It will keep me busy for a bit. I was looking at picking up a set of 16" rims since i will have alot more choice on larger narrow tires then in the 15. It seems that the only large narrow somewhat winter tire in a 15 is the BFG. Does anyone know of any other?

Nice to hear from a local krol. When I am in PG next, we should grab a coffee, or vise versa if you are coming this way. The thing is here is that they never maintain the roads. Do you do much driving in the bush with those tires? Sledding? Hunting ect? I am presuming that they are the AT's? There is a fellow down the road from me that runs these tires in a 37 right now and I have been meaning to ask him how he does. No dents on his truck so he must be able to keep it between the lines

BChunter, i have done some hunting, actually, in the houston area with a moderate amount of snow fall and the tires did fine, we were driving on FSR's and some old unmaintained roads, some skidding trails, I really didn't have a problem with them. Other than that, i'v made a couple of trips to Edmonton, in white-out conditions, it was highway, but before any plows hit the road. Other pickups were pulling over, but I kept trucking. The tires seem quite good in snow conditions. I know they fullfill the severe snow fall requirements for tires. They're not great in the mud though.

This is exactly the kind of info that I was looking for krol. Thanks a ton. And it is really cool that I can relate to the terrain that you go in. I hunt a ton up the houston / burns lake area and know what the terrain is so that gives me some background.
I have no intentions on using these in the summer since i have a set of 35 Kumho MT's that I will be using.
I presume that the BFG 35's you are running at 12.5 wide?
Thanks for the help.
