Hey Miescha, Your procedure to fix the console is right on the money. I was a little afraid to yank the thing off, but I figured WTF...It's not working anyway. None of the chips you mentioned looked like it was loose, so I just reflowed the solder and added a bit to each one. Put it back together and PRESTO! Although it was depressing that it came up showing my gas milage....10.7....Oh well. Thanks for the great procedure!

Just performed this fix and it the display is working! I just bought an 02 F250 CC SB 7.3 and the overhead was out. Took it down and the 620 was rattling around in the case and the 680 was hanging on halfway. Bought a 15 watt soldering iron and some .032" solder at Radio Shack, (they didnt have .015) and soldered them back on and its good to go. Mileage showed up as 13.9, who know how long its been since it has worked, Thanks a bunch, I never would have tried this on my own. Circuit boards and electronics/wiring in general scare me. Thank you Miescha!

Just repaired my overhead display with the great info contained in this thread.

THANKS posters

I must add, the soldering was among some of the most tedious I have ever done, and I am no soldering newbie.

With fuel prices what they are... I have been running on the bottom of the tank a lot lately and the glow of the MTE guage (while only marginaly accurate) will be a welcomed sight.

thanks again, FTE FTW

Question 04 f35 overhead console

I have managed to get the over head console apart now looking at the circuit board. My 04 circuit board does not seem to look like the one shown here : I have only 5 chips that I can see...Cannot find chips 680 (the 2 to the right of the board).
Question is my 04 board suppose to look like this to and if so where can I buy the 2 680 chips if they are missing...I took everything apart at the kitchen table and nothing has fallen out...so is there a picture somewhere of an 04 circuit board?

It worked

This fix worked perfectly. THANKS. One of the 680 chips were hanging so I soldered it back on and it works perfectly. Then I noticed a 620 laying in the housing completely detached. It seemed to work fine without it but i put it back on nonetheless. I also took the opportunity to change the led's in the buttons with some blue ones I had laying around from my buddies truck. If only I could change thencolor of the display too

Awesome thread, thanks to all. Im missing one and there is another that has popped half way off the board, and I can also see where two of them have already been soldered by someone else...Im in the process of trying to repair mine in my 2002 F250 Lariat, however Im having a hard time finding any stores locally that sell the surface mount resistors. I foung some on ebay from some place overseas, which takes 20-30 days for delivery and Im trying to find something faster than this. Radioshack has a 680 barrell type, however it looks to be too long to fit in the space provided. Can anyone tell me where to buy them???

Anyone??? I found some at Amazon ... but not sure if there are right or not... Since RadioShack does not sell the surface mount resistors, for those of yall that say to get them from there are you using the barrell type 680 ohm resistor?? This site, www.marsport.org.uk/smd/res.htm seems to indicate its only a 68 ohm resistor... Chris

I stopped in a computer shop that we do business with and he said no to Radio shack which we already new as we had stopped there and they told us the same thing....I found one on EBAY and should have it by Monday... I hope it works.... I have been searching for a week..No one on here would answer my question on if there directions of replacing would work on my 04' f350. All I wanted to know was if the boards all were basically the same regardless of year. Gave up and went off on my one....so we will see...

I yanked mine apart today. Found out that there is no need to take the whole unit out, you can just unscrew the 3 screws and take the board out (after jerking the trim piece down)without pulling down the large black piece that us underneath the headliner. I thought I was gonna put a big crease in the headliner getting that second piece down.

I have to pull it apart again, tho. I found one resistor loose, it snapped back into place.Tested it and it actually worked! WOOHOO! I pushed on all the rest of them before reinstalling, but after all the banging around during the reinstall, the resistor must have come loose again.

My next question is about soldering. Do you resolder each end on the face (or top) or do you tear that black sticky stuff off the back and solder each end on the bottom? I thought I read about someone doing it on the backside, which sure seems like it would be easier than soldering it on the topside of the board.

I've had mine fixed twice now (two were loose the first time and two other ones were loose about a year later) and I had an electrician friend at work do the soldering. Both times they were soldered from the front. Those things are tiny and I felt they were beyond my soldering abilities.

Take them to a computer repair shop and they will do it...very inexpensive...

Thanks, but mine were done for free as a favor. Can't get much cheaper than that.
