Did Ford make an overhead console for the Lariat WITHOUT a temp reading?? I have MPG (which isn't correct with a tuner) miles left till empty (which I need to calibrate to my 55 gal tank) and a "dark" screen. I look at the screen closely, and I can see a F* spot, kinda like on a digital screen you can see the "8" that makes any number up. Is it possible that I just need to resolder the resistor for the temp? It'd be nice to have at least one of the three working right!

My overhead console for a 99 f250 superduty doesn't have temp either. Just ave mpg, miles til empty, and the compass reading.

OK, at least I feel better now- maybe mine isn't broken. Anyone know where the temp sensor is??

I believe it is mounted between grill and radiator.

I'll look again, but I've never seen one / didn't notice it even while doing my grill.

Here's one more success story for the "Overhead Console Repair Hall of Fame." 10 minutes of my time and my trusty $19 soldering iron repaired my display. That thing hasn't worked in YEARS!! Now I have temp, compass, and miles to empty in standard AND metric! Woo Hoo!!

HUGE thanks to Miescha for his outstanding directions!

Well here's my first post ... I have a '02 Lariat and my overhead console has gone blank also. It has a drop down trays for sunglasses and remote garage door opener. Is the removal procedure for the shell the same as MIESCHA describes for the '99 model? When I open the sunglasses door there are 2 screws visible (going up). I guess I could take them out and see what happens.

Before my display went blank the first (left most) digit was considerably dimmer than the rest - maybe that was a hint that it was going to let go on me

I think I have heard others state that they had to remove screws on some of the newer models. I believe you are still going to have to do the pull and pop thing. Just watch when you take the display down so you don't lose the little tiny resistor in case it has fallen completely out.

Talking

Thanks for the quick reply. As it turn out, my '02 does not have any screws to remove. Just the pull and tug routine. My only problem with getting the shell off was the inner black shell tabs let loose before the colored shell. Took a bit to seperate the black and colored shell. After I got the colored shell off (about 5 minutes) I got the circuit board out and 2 of the resistor chips were laying in the tray and one was loose. I re-soldered all of them and viola! I have a display again.

This is one great resource and you guys are great.

Thanks

I have to give you guys credit. I ended up breaking my overhead cosole just trying to get it off. For those of you who did it well, maybe you could fire off some tips for those of us who like to break perfectly good parts so we can buy them again.

Well I used a small pry bar to get the cover away from the head liner - just enough to get my little fingers (as many as I could get in there) between the cover and the liner. Because I knew where the clips were (from the photos gallery) I concentrated pulling them one side at a time (starting at the front). I did the same on the remaining clips working my way to the back. I thought it was going to break a couple of times but thank goodness it didn't

Thanks for the info, the instructions were awesome and you diagnosed that problem down to the exact resistor that was at fault. Overhead console works again now.
