vacuum question

I noticed a crack in my vacuum canister, resulting in my a/c to only blow out of the defrost vents. I connected the the two lines that go into the canister together and it seems to have fixed the problem. My question is, what will this effect? What is the purpose of the canister? And am I going to mess something up by bypassing the canister?

Vehicle is a 99 ranger 4x4

thanks in advance,
Dusty

I think it's a storage tank that helps keep the vacuum consistent in that circuit otherwise, you may notice a difference due to engine rpm...
