Question 04 FX4 Tranny code - Huh?

I just bought an 04 FX4 SCAB yesterday and was playing around the the codes on the build sticker. My tranny (auto) has a sticker code of "B" which is not even listed in the manual.

Anyone know what the scoop is here?

Thanks,
CMOS

Your FX4 wold have the 5.4 engine and it would have the 4r75e transmission which is heavier duty than the previous transmissions. The 4.6 engine has a 4r70e.

from the ford website

Another improvement in the drivetrain is the use of the new 4R75E 4-speed automatic. The 4R75E is an evolution of the 4R70E that is used in the current F-150. The biggest changes are a faster computer, redesigned toque converter, addition of a turbine-speed sensor, “smart” shift control unit, and a fully sealed case filled with lifetime transmission fluid.

i think the sealed tranny is the stupidist idea ever.

Do tell more. Is your complaint that Ford says the fluid doesn't need to ever be changed?

Sort of like a "Maintenance Free battery". (they're not!)

no , they really sealed the damn thing. no dipstick pan or servicable filter. the same design as the explorer tranny. there is no way to gain entry to the unit without teardown through the front after removing the pump.

A redesigned torque converter improves launch performance and increases efficiency.
-A turbine speed sensor improves transmission control, providing the basis for fully electronic shift scheduling to limit "hunting" and to fine-tune shift speed and feel.
-Increased microprocessor speed improves responsiveness and precision of the control system.
-"Smart" fully electronic shift scheduling knows what the torque will be in the next gear so it chooses the shift points based on the vehicle's projected performance in the next gear.
-Coupled with the electronic throttle strategy, the transmission computes the output torque required to maintain the vehicle speed, and chooses the correct gear and converter state accordingly.
-A sealed case and lifetime transmission fluid make the transmission maintenance free, while adaptive pressure control maintains consistent shift feel over time.

4r75e

so that means 4 gears
rear wheel drive
750 ft pounds max input torque
e is electronic

the tranny is plenty beefy to do what ever you want with it.

Good info Ford390,

Well, based on what you wrote, it sounds like I really don't need a Shift Kit becasue a Tuner would be a good controller of the shift rate and points - ? Correct?

go with a tuner. you cannot gain acess to install a shift kit. also i don't think a shift kit is made yet. however do not pass the 750 ft pound mark on the tranny it will shorten life. so you can add 20 more ft pounds of torque and still be fine.

I have a 2005 FX4. I don't know about a filter in the transmission, but I do know that it has a removable pan and a dipstick. Just looked at it. The transmission code on the build sticker is "B". Anyone know if this is the 4R75E, or what?

It's got to be the 4R75e. My 04 also has the "B" tranny code, which is not even in the Owner's Manual. (!?)

I also have a dipstick and removeable tranny pan.

there is also the 4r75w same as the 4r70w but can accept more torque.

CMOS, check your manual in the Maintenance and Specifications section, under Identifying Your Vehicle. In my 05 manual, it starts on page 301 and the transmission code designations are on page 302. Code B Four-speed automatic (4R75E)

Crazy - no kidding - my manual does not list the code "B" in that tranny table, nor is there any mention of the 4R75e. Weird....
