1986 2.9L fuel filter change?
Hi there, I am new to this forum but really enjoying the expertise that is out there. Hope I can get some help here. I understand that my 86 ranger only has one fuel filter (a paper element cartridge type with O-ring) located before the high pressure fuel pump but how do I go about removing the old cartridge and installing the new one? How do I remove the plastic shield and do the bolts need to be removed with the whole unit? Are there any special tools needed on this for the o-ring, etc..? A detailed explanation would be greatly appreciated.

Odds are the canister is empty & I wouldnt mess with it. I've heard that theres only a filter in it on trucks with a diesel engine.
I've also heard that it's only a reservoir to keep the front pump supplied with fuel.
The filter you need to change is the one under the driver side floorboard.

Thanks for your reply but on my 86 there is only that one fuel filter and because there is only one fuel filter, I understand that there is a round paper element cartridge inside that will need to be replaced. It is only on the 86 Rangers that have two fuel filters where the rear fuel filter is empty and only used as a resevoir. My 86 Ranger does not have the fuel filter under the floor board near the starter. I believe this to be correct but any amendments by pros would be great. And also the detailed instructions on how to best change this filter would be great.

I have removed the two bolts fastening the metal bracked type shield. But now I am unsure of how to proceed. Do I need to remove the two bolts attaching the whole fuel filter unit to the frame? Or can I just remove the plastic covering and fuel lines? By the way how do I remove the plastic covering for the bowl? Does it just pry off? Sorry to sound like such a beginner but I want to try to save myself from overworking the project. Thanks.

You don't need to remove the valve/ filter assembly from the frame. Once the shield is out of the way, just unscrew the canister from the valve. You can use a strap wrench, oil filter wrench(if you have one to fit it) or a large pair of channel locks. It can be on there tight, so be carefull not to crack it taking it off.
