Post 1997 Ford Explorer

I have a 1997 Ford Explorer V6 SOHC engine. The engine make a clatter noise when I start it in the morning. I have 180,000 miles on it. It sounds like the timing chain . I was told there is 3 timing chains and some guides. I was told it would be expensive . Is this common for Fords or is it something eles like a sensor lossin the timing chain cover?

Welcome to FTE tony!

You might want to do a search on timing chains in the Explorer Forum. There are a lot of discussions on it as many people have had problems with the chains in the 4.0's. I believe there is even a TSB on it.

The problem could also be a lifter or valve train related.

Cool 1997 ford explorer

I had the dealer look at it I have an estimate of $1,411.00 the vehicles is not worth the investment (blue book value is $2600.00) so we decided to go with a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. So good by to Ford……

180,000 miles and good bye to Ford????? Hope you manage to get that out of your Japanese car. I don't see many older Japanese cars around but I do see plenty of older American vehicles.

FYI - if the dealer estimate was $1411.00, you could have it done at a local shop for less than $1000.00 and you could have doen it yourself for around $350.00.
