F350 6.0 Drone at highway speed
I am currently looking at a new 06 F350 6.0 SC 4x4 auto. The dealer let me take it home for an overnight test drive last night. The truck looks, runs and drives great except it has a horrible drone at 65 to 70 miles per hour or around 1800rpm.
I know the 04's and some 05's had drone issues but I thought it was fixed with a new turbo pedestal.
Is the drone still common with the 06 6.0's? The dealer said they will get it into service to see what they can do.
Thanks

I also have an '06' F350 Crewcab DWR. I have over 11,000 miles on 'er now and I don't hear much of anything. Occasionally there is a slight whine of the turbo, but I really don't notice anything else. Why not ask to test deice another truck and see if you notice the same drone.
You get the right one, you'll be very happy.

Here is the TSB for that:
6.0 Moan/Droan Between 1500-2000 RPM:
Engineering has investigated this condition and found the cause to be engine firing pulses causing the turbo mounts to vibrate/resonate. For trucks built through 9-29-03 install a revised turbo pedestal, P/N 3C3Z-6N639-BA. Trucks built after 9-29-03, install a turbo bracket A-brace, P/N 5C3Z-6N639-BA. If the draon is still present after installing the brace on trucks built from 9-30-03 through 1-17-05, replace the turbo pedestal with 5C3Z-6N639-AA. Ensure the droan is not caused by a bound exhaust system. Inspect for any damaged or broken exhaust hangers. Check the turbo downpipe by loosening the pipe at the top and bottom, checking its alignment and retightening. If the droan is still present, check the part number embossed on the turbo pedestal just below the turbo compressor outlet to the intercooler. If the number IS NOT 1846207C1, replace the pedestal with the above part. After replacement, or if the number IS 1846207C1, loosen the turbo inlet pipes and EGR cooler flange and neutralize by installing the components in this order: snug the flange between the LH and RH inlet pipes; torque the EGR cooler clamp to 53 in/lbs; torque the pedestal bolts to 23 ft/lbs; torque the turbo inlet clamp to 9 ft/lbs: snug the inlet pipes to manifolds. Ensure all components are properly aligned. Torque the flange between the LH and RH inlet pipes to 20 ft/lbs and the inlet pipes to the manifolds to 20 ft/lbs. Had an '03 that had the droan fixed and was excellent. This '04 that I now own has been in for the droan and is worse now than it was before. Really bad at about 2000 rpm. Has there been and recent updates to this that work better from the last time I had it done approx. 1 year ago. My build date is 04/04

The dealer finished up with the repairs. Because the truck is an 06 it already has the newest parts listed in the TSB. The dealer re-torqued the turbo pedestal, bracket and relaxed the exhaust. I test drove the truck again on Monday night. It did seem a little better but it still did not seem right. It was a tough decision to walk away because the truck drove perfectly otherwise. The dealer said they had three others on order and should arrive in a few weeks.

Honestly, i believe that there isnt a diesel truck that doesnt drone. The difference between any 10 trucks on the lot regarding drone is the drivers. Mine used to drone....and its not that it quit, its that i got used to it. The ones that 'dont drone' have drivers that have found it acceptable.

MIKE, I have a 2006 F250 6.0 with 3000 miles and it has an apparent drone at 1800-2000 rpms or 65-75 mph. It sounds like an intake moan(like the air cleaner cover turned upside down). I have a call into the deaker 2 days ago but haven't heard back yet. I'm hoping there is a fix for it,because it moans inside the cab bad unless you back below 65 or go over 75. Good luck

Basshunter, Thats is what this truck was doing. The dealer I am working with is excellent and they could not fix it. I have driven a few others and they droned as well but not nearly as loud as the one I wanted to buy. Other things can cause drones so hopfully yours can be corrected. Good luck.

I have it at 1500 rpm about 55mph. Only bothers me when I'm at that speed for awhile.Thats the speed limit but I'm usally over that. lol If he gets too bad I was thinking of a new exhaust.(good excuse to buy one). I don't think the dealer would be much help since its not a problem other than an annoyance.
