C6 tranny in a 1979 F100 302 1/2ton 2X4...?
Does anybody know what transmission is stock in a 1979 F100 302 1/2ton 2X4? Is it the C4 tranny? Is the C4 tranny only a 3 speed auto? My main question is concerning the C6 tranny. Will it fit in my truck....how many speeds is it....is it better or worse....blah, blah, blah.....etc, etc?? I really don't know anything about this truck. I just got it from my dad, and I'm attempting to make it faster, and get better gas mileage. I am hoping to put a 4 speed auto into it if possible. Does anybody have any suggestions.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Dec-01 AT 04:41 AM (EST)]A C4 will have a square pan and a C6 has square pan with the corner above the vaccum modulator forming a s shape..The C6 has 17 bolts holding the pan on...The C6 has only one servo, on the right side of the transmission aft of the dipstick tube...The C6 is much stronger then a c4 if they are both in stock form...As for making it faster and better gas mileage -- those two don't go together!!Yes a C6 will fit behind your small block...Its a 3 speed and your truck probably allready has one in it....

Tim, The C4 would have come with your combo, and yes a C6 smallblock bell will bolt up, and it is a 3 spd also. The C6 is the tuffest tranny and harder to turn than the C4. An AOD is probably what you want to to install in your truck for mpg.
Now you said faster and better mpg, do you understand left and right, they don't go in the same direction. You can spend a lot of money and not go much faster without a rebuild or engine transplant. The 302 aka 5.0 is one of the best engines that Ford ever built, but it is a small V8, and small V8s don't churn out big power.
Drive you dads truck for a while, put some wheels and other things to make it yours and don't worry a lot about smoking your meats.

Don't forget about the EDIT feature, rather than posting again.
Where did it come from? Well, click the smiley that resembles the one you tried to get rid of and look at the CODE of it. Does it resemble the marks you typed? Probably !
